Location and Region Competitions: Quick Start Guide

Additional flexibility with Applause Competitions to do them by location or if you've set-up regions.

What are Location and Region Competitions?

Location and Region Competitions allow you to create team-based contests where entire locations or regions compete together. Instead of individuals competing against each other, each person's work automatically rolls up to their primary location or region—the leaderboard ranks groups, not individuals.

These competitions live directly within the Applause platform, bringing the same automation and simplicity you expect from user competitions to your multi-branch or multi-region structure. Real-time tracking, flexible payout options, and instant delivery keep teams engaged while reducing manual admin work.

Why Location and Region Competitions Matter

Healthy competition between branches and regions drives collective performance and builds team spirit. Location and Region Competitions make it effortless to harness inter-branch rivalry and turn it into measurable business results.

With Location and Region Competitions, you can:

  • Create friendly rivalries between branches to boost engagement and performance.

  • Run head-to-head competitions between two flagship locations or free-for-all contests across all branches.

  • Run region-wide competitions where multiple locations work together toward a common goal.

  • Filter participants by user group to create fair matchups (e.g., technicians only, excluding office staff).

  • Track team performance with live leaderboards visible in the mobile app.

  • Reward entire winning teams with automated payouts—either a fixed amount per person or a split pool.

Location and Region Competitions make growth simple and rewarding, helping you turn inter-branch competition into a driver of company-wide success.

Key Benefits

Location and Region Competitions make it easy to engage your teams, track collective performance, and reward entire branches or regions, all from one place.

  • Team-Based Competition: Individual contributions automatically roll up to location and regional totals. Everyone sees how their work contributes to the team's success, building camaraderie and collective accountability.

  • Flexible Competition Formats: Run head-to-head battles between two locations, or region vs region showdowns. Choose the format that fits your organizational structure and goals.

  • Fair Team Matchups: Filter participants by user group to create balanced competitions. For example, compete only technicians across all locations, excluding leads or office staff, so teams are compared fairly.

  • Real-Time Standings in Mobile: Technicians see live competitions showing how their location is performing against other locations. They can track their team's progress in real time and take action to help their branch win.

  • Automated Team Payouts: Choose between per-user payouts (every person at the winning location receives a fixed amount) or split payouts (a fixed pool divided equally among all team members). Winners are rewarded instantly through automated delivery.

  • Complete Control for Admins: Create, schedule, and manage location and region competitions from the same dashboard you use for user competitions. Run recurring contests (daily, weekly, monthly) or one-time events tailored to your business cycles.

How It Works

Location Competitions

The platform sums the selected metric across all users whose primary location is that location. Whichever location has the highest total at the end of the competition period wins.

  • Example: You create a weekly competition tracking completed jobs. Location A has 12 technicians who complete 180 jobs total. Location B has 8 technicians who complete 150 jobs total. Location A wins.

Region Competitions

Regions are groupings of locations. Each user's work rolls up to their primary location, which rolls up to their region—the region with the highest combined total wins.

  • Example: Your company has three regions: Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest. Each region contains multiple branch locations. You create a monthly competition tracking Google reviews. All reviews from all locations in each region are summed together. The region with the most reviews wins.

Setting Up a Location or Region Competition

To create a Location or Region Competition, navigate to the Competitions section in your Applause admin portal.

  1. Go to Competitions → Create New Competition.

  2. Select Format: Choose Leaderboard or First to Goal.

  3. Select Participants and choose Location or Region (instead of User).

  4. Select which locations or regions will participate. You can choose two for a head-to-head battle, or select all for a free-for-all.

    1. (Optional) Apply user group filters to limit participation to specific roles (e.g., technicians only).

  5. Enter Competition Details: Set the name, description, which metric the competition will be based on, the frequency(one-time, daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly), and start date.

6. Set Rewards: Set up bonus payouts for the winners. Enable autobonus to automatically pay out bonuses when the competition ends.

7. Choose your payout type:

  • Per user: Each person at the winning location receives a fixed amount (e.g., 1st place = $50 per user, 2nd place = $30 per user).

  • Split payout: A fixed total is awarded to the winning location and divided equally among all users (e.g., $1,000 split among 10 users = $100 each).

  • Set the payout amounts for each rank (1st place, 2nd place, etc.).

8. Review and Launch: Confirm your settings and launch the competition.

What Technicians See

Technicians see location and region competitions in the mobile app wherever their location or region is actively participating. They can:

  • View live leaderboards showing their location's or region's current standing.

  • See the team total and how it compares to competing locations or regions.

  • Track their own individual contribution through their personal scorecard.

Note: The mobile app currently displays only the participating locations or regions on the leaderboard, not individual user breakdowns within each team.

Important Details

Team Size and Fairness: The platform does not adjust for team size. A location with more technicians has a natural advantage on volume-based metrics. Consider using metrics like average rating or per-tech averages to create fairer matchups, or create a custom powerscore formula to level the playing field between high and low user count locations.

User Group Filters: You can scope a location or region competition to only users in a specific user group across all locations. For example, competing only technicians (not leads or managers). However, you cannot select individual users to participate in location vs. location competitions. Individual matchups require a user competition.

Concurrent Competitions: You can run a user competition and a location competition at the same time, provided your plan allows multiple active competitions. Free-tier accounts are limited to one active competition at a time.

Applause Engage Limitations: Accounts on Applause Engage can create one-time, single-location competitions with no bonus payout. Recurring schedules, bonuses, and multi-location competitions require the Applause Perform plan.

Available Metrics: Any metric available in your scorecard can be used for location and region competitions, subject to your plan tier.

Common Use Cases

  • Multi-branch companies wanting to run inter-branch competitions on Google reviews or completed jobs.

  • Regional managers running competitions across all branches in their region.

  • Companies with 2 flagship locations wanting a head-to-head rivalry competition.
