Step-by-step guide to using filter queries in reports

Filter queries in Google Analytics are a way to include or exclude data from your custom reports. This is a powerful way to focus your reports on specific values of metrics or dimensions.

You can add a filter query to a custom report with the following steps:

1. Select "Projects" in the top menu

2. Add or edit a "Custom Report"

3. Select "+ Show filter"

Filter queries are complicated to write. This is because they use a special filter syntax and require the dimension and metric ga:name IDs (instead of names).

In the example below, we are filtering to only include users who visited a page path that contains /dashboard and are from the country of Canada.

5. Check out the preview of your report

After writing your filter query, the preview will update to show the latest data.

In the comparison description, we mention that the report was created "with a filter."
