WARNING: These steps should be followed exactly in order for your custom domain name to work correctly. If any of these settings are incorrect your domain will not function correctly and may cause issues with customers attempting to purchase art from your site.
Please note: If you intend to use a custom domain name from Namecheap with your site this process is not optional but MANDATORY to complete.
How to connect your domain name to your ASF site
This section will explain how to connect your domain name to your site. The screenshots from Namecheap are for a new domain name; if you have had your domain name connected to another site there may be other settings displayed. If you have any trouble setting this up please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help you get it configured correctly.
Go to www.namecheap.com, click on Sign In on the menu bar, and then enter your login and password before clicking on the Sign In button.
Once you have logged on, you should be viewing the Dashboard page, which will list the domain names you own. Find the one which you are connecting to your Art Storefronts site, and click on the Manage button to the right.
On this page click make sure Nameservers is set to Namecheap BasicDNS.
Now on the options near the top of the page click on Advanced DNS.
This is the page where we will make the first change.
Scroll down until you see the CNAME Record field, and click next to the entry in the Value column (by default this is parkingpage.namecheap.com).
Replace this address with www.artstorefronts.com and click on the Save Changes check mark on the right side of the page.
Warning: You should only put this address into this field. DO NOT put your site address here.
Now scroll back up and click on the Domain button.
On this page we will complete the other part of the configuration process on the Namecheap side, setting up the 301 redirects.
Scroll down the page until you see the Redirect Domain section. Click on Add Redirect.
What you want to have here when you are finished are two entries. One will redirect your domain name without the leading www and the second will redirect the domain name with the leading www. For a new domain name you will already have the first of these entries set up, which means you just need to set up the second. In the Source URL field, enter your domain name with www. at the front of it, but no other characters and without http:// or https:// in front of it. In the Destination URL section enter the same address but with http:// in front of it and an additional / at the end.
Warning: Do not enter http:// or https:// in the Source URL field, as this may cause the domain name to not work correctly. Similarly you MUST put http:// (but NOT https://) at the front of the Destination URL, and a / character at the end of the Destination URL.
You should now have your CNAME and 301 redirects configured, so now it’s time to set up the other end of the connection in your Site Manager.
Let’s start in the Site Manager, and click on the Site Address link.
Now click on Add New.
Now enter your domain name, and click on Create.
Your domain name should now be set up, and should be working correctly within the next 24-48 hours. Until this process has completed, anybody visiting your domain name may experience errors (including SSL errors) or find the domain name is unreachable, but this should resolve itself once this process has been completed.
How to connect a subdomain to your ASF site
This section will explain how to connect a subdomain name to your site, while your domain name is pointing at another site.
On this page click on Advanced DNS.
This is the page where we will set up the subdomain alongside the current domain settings.
Scroll down until you see the Add New Record button.
Click on CNAME Record to select the record type.
Now we set up the subdomain. What you will put into the Host field is the first part of your subdomain, the prefix. The is the section at the start of the subdomain. In my example the full subdomain is shop.sharpduckdistributor.club, but what we need is just the word shop at the start.
Warning: Only enter the first part of your subdomain name into the first section. If you put in the full subdomain it will not work correctly. Also you MUST only put www.artstorefronts.com into the second section. Do not put your subdomain or any other address into this field, or it will not work.
Now that we have the new CNAME setting, we’re ready to log into the Site Manager and set up the connection to the subdomain.
Now let’s log in the Site Manager, and then click on the Site Address tab.
Click on the Add New button.
Now enter your domain name into this field.
Warning: Do not put a www in the front of the subdomain, as this will not work correctly.
Your subdomain should now be set up, and should be working correctly within the next 24-48 hours. Until this process has completed, anybody visiting the subdomain may experience errors (including SSL errors) or find the subdomain is unreachable, but this should resolve itself once this process has been completed.
How to redirect your domain name
This section will explain how to redirect your domain name to another domain name. The intention of this is for pointing a domain name at another domain, so you can have a single main domain name and point additional related domain names at it.
One example of this is to have a primary domain that is your business name, and then have additional domains using the artist name or other related names, which are set up to load the primary domain.
On this page click on Domain.
What we’re going to do first here is clear the existing redirects by clicking on the trash can icons at the end of each line.
Now click on the Add Redirect button.
Now you need to set up two redirects entries. For the first redirect, the Source URL will be the domain name without www at the beginning. For the second redirect, the Source URL will be the domain with an initial www. And the Destination URL will be the full address of the domain name you wish to load.
In my example, the first Source URL is sharpduckdistributor.club, the second Source URL is www.sharpduckdistributor.club, and the Destination URL for both is http://www.mammothrattyduck.club. And click on the Save Changes checkmark after entering each line.
Your domain name should now be set up, and should be working correctly within the next 24-48 hours. Until this process has completed, anybody visiting this domain may experience errors (including SSL errors) or find this domain or the destination domain is unreachable, but this should resolve itself once this process has been completed.
If you don't already own one, please consider getting a Custom Email Address. A custom email address is essentially a unique email address associated with your brand or website's domain. It serves as a means of crafting personalized email identities for your organization, rather than relying on generic addresses offered by email service providers. For example, a custom email address can be used to create email addresses in the format user@yourdomain.com. Please read more about it here: Using your Custom Email Address from Your Custom Domain
