Learn how to configure a reward tier that automatically adds a free product to the cart when a customer reaches a specific cart value.

Overview

Offering a free product is an effective way to encourage higher order values. In Upcart, you can create a product-based reward tier that adds a designated item to the cart when customers reach a spending threshold. This guide walks you through the setup process and explains how to manage pricing in Shopify.

Setting Up a Product Reward Tier

  1. Go to your Upcart dashboard and open the Cart Editor.

  2. Navigate to the Rewards section.

  3. Click Add New Reward Tier and select Product as the reward type.

  4. Choose a Reward Basis (such as cart subtotal) and define the threshold amount.

  5. Select the product you want to automatically add once the threshold is reached.

Upcart does not apply pricing discounts automatically. To make the product free, you’ll need to configure pricing through your Shopify settings or with the help of a third-party app. Below are two recommended methods.

Method 1: Create a Free Version of the Product (Recommended)

  1. In Shopify, create a duplicate of the product or a separate variant priced at $0.

  2. Hide this free product from your storefront by disabling it from your online sales channel.

  3. Ensure the product remains active in your store so Upcart can still add it to the cart.

Method 2: Use an Automatic Discount in Shopify

  1. Set up an automatic discount in Shopify that triggers when the cart reaches your desired threshold (e.g., $200).

  2. If needed, make sure the discount is configured to stack with other discounts.

    • Keep in mind that Shopify has specific rules and limitations around discounting, which may impact how the discount is applied in certain situations.
