What is Shopify Metafield Integration?

An overview of how to sync Asklayer survey responses to Shopify customer metafields, and use them for customer support, segment creation, Shopify Flow, and integration with other apps.

Asklayer survey responses can be written to Shopify customer metafields. By syncing response data to the Shopify side, you can put survey results to use in various aspects of store operations.

Use Cases

Survey responses written to metafields can mainly be used in the following ways:

1. Customer support and customer segment creation based on survey responses

Since response content can be kept as part of the customer profile, you can use it as reference information when handling inquiries, or create customer segments based on response content for use in email marketing and more.

2. Use as a trigger or condition in Shopify Flow

By using metafield values as triggers or conditions in Shopify Flow, you can automatically execute actions—such as tagging or sending emails—for customers who gave a specific response.

3. Integration with other Shopify apps

Data written to metafields can be used for integration with other Shopify apps that can reference metafields.

Requirements for Integration

In order to write survey responses to metafields, the respondent must be identifiable as a Shopify customer. Integration is possible if any of the following apply:

  1. The respondent answers the survey while logged in to the Shopify store

  2. The respondent answers a survey shown after completing a purchase on the Shopify store (post-purchase survey)

  3. The Asklayer survey includes a question that collects an email address, and that email address matches an existing Shopify customer's email address

Preparation

Before setting up the integration, you must first create the destination metafield on the Shopify side. For details on metafields, please refer to Shopify Metafields.

Writing Methods

You can choose from the following three methods for writing to metafields:

  1. Write the customer's response as-is to the metafield — for cases where you want to save free-text responses, etc., exactly as given

  2. Write a fixed value based on the selected response — for cases where you want to assign an arbitrary fixed value to each answer choice

  3. Write an arbitrary value upon survey completion — for cases where you want to record the completion of the survey itself, rather than individual responses

The setup steps for each are explained in the following article:
