Data types
Updated over a week ago

Data types are high-level categories for organizing incoming data. Many data types support a variety of different point types and related metrics.

👍 This article will help you:

  • Understand the relationship between data types and point types

  • Learn what metrics are supported for each point type

Overview

Atrius organizes data so that it's easy to filter tables and apps, and configure dashboards.

For instance, when configuring a card, all subsequent form fields are automatically filtered to provide only the selections that are relevant based on your prior selections:

  • Selecting a data type reveals a list of available point types for that data type.

  • Selecting a point type reveals a list of available points for that point type.

  • Selecting a point reveals a list of available metrics for that point.

  • Selecting a metric reveals a list of available units for that metric.

By appropriately categorizing your bill points, points, and sensors, you can ensure that Atrius users find the right data quickly.

Data types

Data types segment your data into appropriate categories. Only data types for which your organization has data will be displayed. The following data types are supported:

Data Type Category

Description

Bills

Bill data from a utility account.

Interval meters

Interval data from a meter.

Systems & sensors

Instantaneous data from a sensor.

Other measurements

Miscellaneous or undefined data from any source.

Weather & air quality

Weather and air quality data from AerisWeather, a global weather API.

Energy Star

Energy Star and EUI data from Energy Star Portfolio Manager.

Assets

Asset data from an external asset management system.

Work orders

Maintenance and cost data from an external work order management system.

Projects

Project cost and performance data from projects tracked in the Projects app.

Point types

Point types describe what you are monitoring from a system or device. Point type determines the available reading type, metric, and unit options for a given point.

Download a complete list of our supported point types (including point type categories, supported units of measurement, and associated standard emissions factors):

Nearby vs. onsite weather and air quality data

AerisWeather, a global weather API, provides weather and air quality data automatically from nearby weather stations. These point types are available to view on the Weather tab of a building, and they can be visualized in cards by selecting the 'Weather & air quality' data type.

Systems & sensors are used for onsite monitoring. Systems & sensors 'Weather' and 'Air Quality' point type categories and their respective point types correspond to points that you monitor onsite, with either your own weather station or air quality sensors.

Metrics

Based on the data type and point type for a given point, the point's data may be expressed using one or more metrics. The following metrics are supported:

Metric

Description

Consumption / Production

Total resource use during each period.

Interval demand

Average rate of resource use during each period.

Cost

Total cost associated with resource use during each period.

For points, cost is computed using the assigned pricing schedule for each point found in Settings > Utility Prices.

Emissions

Total emissions associated with resource use during each period. Emission rates are defined for each building and point type in the Emissions app.

Bill itemizations

How total cost is broken down into sub-costs by a utility provider. Supported bill itemizations include:
- Consumption costs
- Demand costs
- Service costs
- Supply costs
- Taxes
- Adjustments
- Other costs

Only available for Data type = Bills.

The following metrics are only available for Data type = Systems & sensors and Other measurements:

Metric

Description

Instantaneous

Average of all values during each period.

Only available for points with instantaneous units.

Total

Total of all values during each period.

Average rate

Average of all values during each period.

Median rate

Median rate value during each period at the source resolution.

Only available for Location Analytics point types.

Min total

Minimum total value during each period at the selected resolution.

Min rate

Minimum rate value during each period at the selected resolution.

Max total

Maximum total value during each period at the selected resolution.

Max rate

Maximum rate value during each period at the selected resolution.

The following additional metrics are only available for Data type = Interval meters:

Metric

Description

Min consumption / production

Minimum total resource use during each period at the selected resolution.

Min interval demand

Minimum average rate of resource use during each period at the selected resolution.

Max consumption / production

Maximum total resource use during each period at the selected resolution.

Max interval demand

Maximum average rate of resource use during each period at the selected resolution. Select Resolution = Quarter-hour for peak demand.

Data types of Energy Star and Work orders do not have a relationship with any point type or point. Instead, they have a unique set of metrics:

  • For Energy Star, select a metric of Energy Star score or EUI.

  • For work orders, select a Problem type, then select a metric of cost or count.

Energy Star

Energy Star Portfolio Manager data includes metrics that are specific to Energy Star benchmarking:

Metric

Description

Energy Star score

1 to 100 score that helps you assess how your building is performing relative to its peers. Buildings must have 12 months of data to receive an Energy Star score.

A score of 50 is the median. A score of 75 or higher means it is a top performer and may be eligible for Energy Star certification.

Site energy use intensity (EUI)

How much energy a building uses as reflected in its utility bills.

Source energy use intensity (EUI)

How much total energy a building uses, including all transmission, delivery, and production losses. By taking all energy use into account, source EUI provides the most complete assessment of energy efficiency in a building.

Weather normalized site energy use intensity (EUI)

How much energy a building uses as reflected in its utility bills, with weather effects removed based on a 30-year average weather baseline.

Weather normalized source energy use intensity (EUI)

How much total energy a building uses, including all transmission, delivery, and production losses, with weather effects removed based on a 30-year average weather baseline.
