Overview
Energy Star Portfolio Manager (ESPM) is a free benchmarking tool created by U.S. EPA in 1992, and is used by 40% of commercial buildings in the U.S. ESPM assigns each building an Energy Star score between 1-100, where a score of 50 represents median energy performance and a score of 75 means the building performs better than 75% of all similar buildings nationwide.
There are several key actions that must take place in order to share data between Atrius and ESPM:
Create an ESPM account and set up properties and meters. If historical consumption data exists in ESPM, ESPM will calculate an Energy Star score, Site energy use intensity (EUI), and Source EUI for each property.
Set up buildings, points, and bill points in Atrius. All reporting properties should be set up with live integrations.
Initiate a building discovery. If historical consumption data exists in ESPM, building discovery will bring the Energy Star scores, Site EUI, and Source EUI into Atrius.
At this point, you have the option to create a data "pull" to bring consumption data from ESPM into Atrius and/or create a data "push" to automatically report your Atrius consumption data to ESPM.
Below is a step-by-step process for setting up and validating the integration configuration between your Energy Star Portfolio Manager account and Atrius.
Share Energy Star data with Atrius
Add Atrius as a Contact
Sign in to your Energy Star Portfolio Manager account.
Select Contacts in the upper right.
On the My Contacts page, type "Atrius" in the search field and select 'Search for new contacts'.
On the Search Results page, select 'Connect' to establish a connection with Atrius.
Agree to the Terms of Use and select 'Send Connection Request'.
A status message will appear: "You have successfully sent a connection request to Atrius Building Insights. When Atrius has accepted your request, you will be able to share properties and, therefore, authorize this provider to begin exchanging data with your property(ies)."
Allow 5 minutes for Atrius to receive and process the request. After 5 minutes, you should see a notification, stating “Atrius Building Insights has accepted your request”, on the MyPortfolio tab.
Set up data exchange
In Energy Star Portfolio Manager, select the Sharing tab.
Select 'Share with your Utility or Service Provider for exchanging data' under My Shared Properties.
You will be taken to a page called Share Properties for Exchanging Data. Select 'Atrius Building Insights' as the web services provider.
Select the properties you want to share (one, many, or all).
Under Permissions, select 'Bulk Sharing', and 'Exchange Data Full Access'.
Select 'Authorize Exchange' once all fields have been inputted.
Lastly, you will then be taken to a screen showing that you have successfully completed the data exchange.
Connect ESPM properties to Atrius
Connect Energy Star Gateway ID
In Atrius, go to Settings on the left side menu, then Integrations.
Select 'Add an integration' on the top right of the page.
On the Add an Integration page, under Renewables & Generation, select 'Energy Star Portfolio Manager'.
Enter your Energy Star username as the Gateway ID, then select 'Connect'.
📘 Property Data Administrator
Each Energy Star Portfolio Manager property is owned by a Property Data Administrator. If you are the Property Data Administrator, then you can go ahead and connect to Atrius using your ESPM username as the gateway ID.
However, if a Property Data Administrator has shared a property with your ESPM user account and you would like to connect this property to Atrius, you must use the username of the Property Data Administrator as the gateway ID.
Connect Energy Star properties via building discovery
In Atrius, go to Settings on the left side menu, then Integrations > Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
Select 'Edit this Portfolio' on the top right of the Energy Star page.
On the Building Discovery tab, select 'Connect' to pair an Energy Star property with an Atrius building. Please note that it may take some time for the Energy Star properties to appear; you may need to select 'Rediscover properties' and wait a few minutes.
Automated Reporting: Push data from Atrius to ESPM
Set up Automated Reporting
In Atrius, go to Settings on the left side menu, then Integrations > Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
Select 'Edit this Portfolio' on the top right of the Energy Star page.
Select the Automated Reporting tab on the Edit Energy Star page. For each building, you’ll be able to see all available points and bill points that can be pushed to ESPM. Select 'Set up reporting' for each desired point or bill point.
In the modal window that appears, fill out the required fields, then select 'Start Reporting'.
🚧 Notes on setting up Automated Reporting
Sending Monthly Usage is required.
Sending Estimated Cost is optional and only applies to non-bill points. Cost is estimated based on usage and Utility Prices schedules.
Sending Historical Data is optional. This will automatically push all existing historical data for this point to ESPM. Otherwise, the first push will be the next available data in Atrius after the automated report is set up.
By default, Atrius will automatically create a new Energy Star point with a “by Building Insights” identifier in both Atrius and ESPM. Atrius points cannot be pushed to existing Energy Star meters.
Select meters to compute Energy Star score in ESPM
For each building where “push” meters have been set up, follow the steps below to ensure “push” meters are included under Meters - Used to Compute Metrics. If there are meters under Additional Meters - Not Used in Metrics, these meters will not be included in your Energy Star score.
In ESPM, select the MyPortfolio tab.
Select the name of a property.
On that property’s overview, select the Energy tab.
Select 'Change Meter Selections'.
On the Select Energy Meters to Include in Metrics page, select the checkbox in the upper left corner of the Energy Meters table. This will select all meters.
Select 'Apply Selections' on the bottom right of the page. Your “push” meter will now be included in future Energy Star scores.
Verify Automated Reporting
Once you have set up automated reporting from Atrius to Energy Star Portfolio Manager, the delivery date for the first and subsequent automated reports will depend on the data type: Points or Bill points.
Points: Data will be sent on the first day of each month. For example, if you set up automated reporting on October 14, the first automated report would be delivered to ESPM on November 1. The automated report will include total monthly consumption (along with estimated cost, if selected) for the previous month.
Bill points: Data will be sent on the first day after a bill is recorded in Atrius. For example, if you set up automated reporting on October 14 and received a new utility bill on October 21, the first automated report would be delivered to ESPM on October 22. Any subsequent edits to bill data will also be re-pushed within a couple days.
You can verify the first automated reading and past automated readings via the Automated Reporting section in Atrius. Select 'View Past Reports' to view a table of the past reports sent from Atrius to ESPM.
🚧 Option to push historical data
Energy Star Portfolio Manager requires at least 12 months of data in order to compute an Energy Star score. By default, Atrius will not push historical data to ESPM. The first push will be the next available data in Atrius after the automated report is set up.
If you would like to push historical data, you can select the checkbox called "Historical Data" in the "Set Up Automated Reporting" modal. This will automatically push all existing historical data in Atrius to ESPM. You should start to see historical data in ESPM a day or two after you set up the push. If historical data does not exist in Atrius, then you will need to upload the data directly into ESPM.
Automated Reading: Pull data from ESPM into Atrius
Set up Automated Reading
In Atrius, go to Settings on the left side menu, then Integrations > Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
Select 'Edit this Portfolio' on the top right of the Energy Star page.
Select the Automated Reading tab on the Edit Energy Star page. For each building, you'll be able to see all available Energy Star meters whose data can be pulled into Atrius. Update the Point (display name) and Scope fields.
Select 'Read data' to initiate data collection for each point.
Verify Automated Reading
The most recent ESPM reading will arrive in Atrius within the first 24 hours of being connected. This will typically be the most recent monthly ESPM reading. For each subsequent 24 hour period, the next 8 ESPM readings (representing the next 8 months of data) will arrive in Atrius until all historical ESPM data has been received.
For any new or updated readings in ESPM, Atrius will pull the latest reading from ESPM every day, and pull historical data every 7 days.
Atrius can pull up to 8 years of historical monthly consumption data from Energy Star Portfolio Manager. Atrius does not pull cost data from ESPM.
