Atticus operates differently than a traditional word processor, which affects the implementation of smart quotes. Originally, the plan was to enable automatic curly quotes. However, based on valuable feedback from authors and considering the programming limitations associated with generating smart quotes automatically, a new system was developed to prioritize author control over the final product.
When you upload your document to Atticus, it will maintain the quotes as formatted in your Word document.
When typing in Atticus, straight quotes will be used. You can manually apply curly quotes using Keyboard Shortcuts (https://www.atticus.io/keyboard-shortcuts-for-atticus/) or use the Apply Curly Quote feature in the right sidebar to automatically add them. Since no algorithm can apply curly quotes with 100% accuracy, be sure to check your document and make manual changes where necessary.
