Why can’t I open the snapshot/JSON/backup file?

Updated over 4 months ago

The JSON backup files generated by Atticus are encoded files that allow the support team to restore a book on your account if anything unusual or accidental happens to your content. The JSON file isn’t meant to be read or edited manually. It’s a structured format that Atticus uses to store and organize your book’s information.

For maximum safety, we recommend regularly creating backups and storing them in a secure location.

If you need a backup version that you can read or edit outside of Atticus, you may also want to export a .docx file. To export to Word, you can click "Export docx" in the Status bar right below the content editor.

Keep in mind that Word does not have the ability to display the complex coding Atticus uses to format and design your book though, so it will only retain basic formatting, such as chapter titles and, of course, all your content. It's ideal for editing and a back up version of your manuscript, but if you need a fully formatted version, you'll have to export to either ePub or PDF.
