Creating a Two-Page Spread

Updated over 3 months ago

You’ll want to save your two page image as two separate images—one for the left page and one for the right. Here’s an easy walkthrough to help you do that:

1. Set up the correct page size

Start by making sure each image matches your book’s trim size plus bleed. You can use a trim + bleed calculator to double-check the exact dimensions.

2. Splitting the image in Photoshop or Canva

If you’re using a design tool like Photoshop or Canva, create a canvas/artboard at the size of a single page.

Add your full map, scale it up to full size, and position it so only the left half or right half is visible on that page.

Then create a second artboard with the same dimensions and place the other half of the map there. Make sure both halves meet perfectly in the middle so nothing is missing or duplicated.

Just keep in mind: the very center of the spread gets pulled into the crease, so try not to place any important details right on that line.

3. Using BookBrush (super easy option!)

If you have a BookBrush account (or sign up using this link: https://www.atticus.io/bookbrush for 15 free downloads), you can use one of the Atticus two-page spread templates with bleed.

Just drop your full map across the spread, and when you download, BookBrush will automatically split it into two perfectly sized pages for you.

4. Uploading the images into Atticus

For the left page:

  • Click the three dots next to Add a Chapter and choose Full Page Image.

  • Drag this new page to where you want it in the left navigation panel and upload your left image.

  • Click the three dots next to the page title and set Begin on → Left Side.

  • (Optional) Click the little gear icon and choose Hide from Table of Contents if you want it to stay out of your TOC.

* Note: If this image comes before your very first chapter, be sure to place it in the Front Matter. That's because the first page of the main body must always start on the right side.

For the right page:

Just repeat the same steps, but set it to Begin on → Right Side instead.
