Why Custom Deal Promo Codes Don’t Work at Shopify Checkout (ADU App Guide)

Explains why Custom Deal codes don’t work at checkout and how to apply them using the app’s discount code widget.

Updated over a month ago

If you’re using the Custom Deal feature in the Automatic Discounts & Upsells (ADU) app to create promo code-based deals, it’s important to know that these codes will not work if entered in Shopify’s native discount field at checkout.

❓ Why doesn’t it work?

Shopify restricts third-party apps from applying or modifying discounts at the checkout stage. This means:

  • Promo codes created under Promotions > Custom Deals in the ADU app cannot be validated or triggered through Shopify’s native discount code box on the checkout page.

  • This is a limitation of Shopify’s platform and not a bug in the app.

✅ How should customers apply the code?

To ensure the promo code works, customers need to apply the code through the ADU app’s floating discount widget, found on your storefront pages (e.g., product or cart pages).

Here’s how it works:

  1. The customer clicks the floating promo code icon (usually at the bottom-center or bottom-right of the screen).

  2. They enter the Custom Deal promo code (e.g., SAVE20).

  3. If the code is valid, the discount will be applied before they proceed to checkout.

  4. The discounted pricing will carry through automatically to checkout.

💡 Tip: This floating widget is your app’s “discount box.” It’s the only field where Custom Deal codes will work.

📍 Keep the widget visible

To make sure customers always see the promo code input field:

  1. Go to the Settings section of the app.

  2. Click the General tab.

  3. Under the General Settings > Promotion explorer & Floating icon, set the visibility to Always visible.

⚠️ What happens if customers skip the widget?

If customers enter the code only at the Shopify checkout, the code will not work, and they’ll miss the discount.

To reduce confusion:

  • Add a message near the cart or product pages to remind users to enter their promo code before checkout.

  • If you’re on Shopify Plus, you may be able to customize your checkout to hide the native discount field.
