While optional, test drives are a common and highly recommended part of any vehicle sale. However, they can be the most intimidating step for some people. Here are some tips to follow to make sure your test drive is safe for both the seller and buyer.
Schedule online through Autotrader so there's a record of when and where you're meeting. You can do this by selecitng "Schedule Test Drive" from a vehicle's listing page, or from the Private Seller Exchange.
Select a public place and make sure the other party has a green check mark showing their identity has been verified.
Once you meet, ask to take a picture of the driver's license and insurance card. Make sure the name and photo match who you're expecting to meet.
Sometimes it's reassuring to bring a friend who will wait for you at the meeting spot. At least let a friend know you're going on a test drive and have a route planned out so they know about how long it should take.
Trust your gut and don’t get in the car if you don’t feel safe.
