Your Backpack account is a real bank account — with your own account and routing number — which lets you make electronic withdrawals directly from your 529 plan.
Every 529 plan is a little different. Backpack guides you through your plan’s specific steps for linking your account and making a withdrawal.
Backpack works directly with your university. Schools have their own Backpack account to receive payments, so funds arrive faster and more reliably.
Backpack accounts are held by Old Missouri Bank (OMB), a state-chartered bank. All funds are FDIC-insured up to the legal limits, just like any other U.S. bank account.
You can create a pending tuition payment in Backpack before your 529 funds even arrive. This gives your university a heads-up that your payment is on the way and helps secure your spot before the deadline.
If your 529 plan sends funds to the plan owner first, you can still transfer them to Backpack using Add Money → Bank Transfer and send your tuition payment from there.

Investment liquidation: Most 529 withdrawals involve selling invested assets before cash can be transferred. This liquidation step and ACH transfer typically take 3–4 business days.
Weekends and holidays: Funds move only on business days.
School processing times: Some schools need an extra day to post incoming payments to your student account.
