Define your Goal(s)
What is your ultimate goal(s) to learn Thai? Set the right expectations with the right plan.
Do you want to be fluent or do you want to only get by with ease?
You might consider to become fluent if:
You plan to live in Thailand for the long term.
You plan to retire or move to Thailand.
You have your business in Thailand or need to lead a team of Thai workers.
You want to establish your life, community, and cultural understanding in Thailand.
You would like to feel like HOME in Thailand.
You might consider learning basic Thai to get by if:
You have a family, relative, or partner who is Thai.
You plan to be in Thailand for a shorter term.
You're frequent travelers.
You just want to get by with daily life in Thailand.
Define your Focus(s)
Do you need to learn basic Thai reading & writing? Maybe not, if you just want to get by with daily life and have a small chat with local people.
However, if your goal is to become fluent in Thai, it's inevitable not to learn basic Thai reading. You will not only be able to learn Thai with Thai scripts and read Thai menus, or signs, but you will also:
Avoid the confusion of English transliteration
Improve your pronunciation
Feel more engaged from seeing Thai words everywhere (especially when you're in Thailand)
Increase input channels to learn Thai by reading social media posts, articles, etc.
We usually separate learning conversation skills from reading and writing skills. Thai reading is demanding in terms of energy and time (yet very rewarding). It's better to focus on one skill at a time.
Take the Personalization Quiz
These questions are included in the Personalization Quiz to help craft the learning journey that is most suitable for you. If you're ready, let's take the quiz.
