Pausing & Resuming a BrainCheck Test (Policy & Workflow)

BrainCheck tests do not resume. If a session is paused/stopped, the next start will begin from the very first step to protect test validity.

Overview

To ensure clinical accuracy, BrainCheck testing must be completed in a single, continuous session. Pausing or stopping mid-test can invalidate results—especially tasks that depend on timing (e.g., Delayed Recognition). For this reason, BrainCheck is designed to restart from the beginning if a test is interrupted.

Key Policy

  • No partial resumes. Any interrupted session will restart from the beginning when the patient re-enters the test.

  • Why: Interruptions can alter attention, memory encoding, and the timing intervals required for accurate scoring (notably Delayed Recognition), leading to inaccurate or non-interpretable data.

If an Interruption Happens

In person

  1. Stop the session calmly and let the patient know you’ll restart to protect result accuracy.

  2. Address the cause (restroom, noise, device power, etc.).

  3. Start a new test session once conditions are stable.

  4. Document in the patient note that the prior attempt was interrupted and a fresh test was started for validity.

Remote/Telehealth

  1. End the call/test and explain that BrainCheck requires a continuous session for valid results.

  2. Resolve the issue (connectivity, device audio/video, distractions).

  3. Document the interruption and the decision to restart for clinical validity.

Tip: If an interruption occurs early, restarting immediately is usually best. If the patient is fatigued or distressed, consider rescheduling per your clinical judgment.

Best Practices to Prevent Interruptions

  • Set expectations up front: “This test has to be completed in one sitting without breaks to ensure accuracy.”

  • Prep the environment: Quiet room, no interruptions, comfortable seating, good lighting.

  • Device readiness: Charged device, stable internet, supported browser, notifications off/do not disturb.

  • Patient readiness: Glasses on and phones put away.

  • Telehealth specifics: Confirm audio/video quality, remind the patient not to switch apps or take calls mid-test, and remain continuously proctored when required.

FAQ

  • Can I pick up where we left off?
No. BrainCheck restarts from the beginning to maintain scientific and scoring validity.

  • What if the wrong test was launched?
Stop immediately and launch the correct test; document the error and the restart.

  • Is it okay to pause just before Delayed Recognition?
No. Any pause disturbs the fixed intervals and compromises accuracy—always restart.
