Settings for Pulse activity

All settings of the Pulse activity explained

Updated over 3 months ago

Users with the requisite permissions can create a Pulse activity directly within a Moodle course. To do so, add the Pulse module to your Moodle course. All settings are listed below.

Pulse presets

When creating a new Pulse, you can use one of the available presets. Each preset displays the following information, when available: preset icon, title, description, and configurable parameters. When using a preset you can directly edit the settings of all configurable parameters in the modal window.

  • ‘Apply and customize’ will apply all changes made to the configurable parameters and will open the Pulse activity’s settings with the applied changes and the inherited settings from the preset. Here, all settings can be adapted.

  • ‘Apply and save’ will apply all changes made to the configurable parameters and will create the Pulse activity without further customization of the inherited settings from the preset.

Each setting that is not manually overwritten for the Pulse activity will be inherited from the preset. When not using a preset, all settings must be configured manually below.

General

The title is used as the subject and the content as the message text for the invitation, if not overwritten in the settings in the Invitation section.

Note: Images added from your Moodle database will only be visible in the notifications if the database is public.

  • Title: Serves an administrative purpose, helping to distinguish different Pulse activities. Ensuring that the title is descriptive of the Pulse activity’s function will help maintain a better overview of all Pulse activities. Setting a title is mandatory for creating a Pulse activity.

  • Content: This will be displayed on the course page and can inform students about the Pulse activity. When hidden, it can help teachers to stay on top of the implemented Pulse activities and their functions.

Actions

You can add credits to a user profile with a Pulse activity. Only whole numbers are accepted as valid input.

To use this feature, the profile field in the global settings of the Pulse plugin must be configured first. If you do not have the requisite permissions, please ask your local administrator to set this up.

Reaction

Reaction enables recipients of notifications to react directly from the email without being logged into the platform. This feature uses tokenized links, which are valid for a configurable amount of time (set in the global settings). Once the configured amount of time elapses, the recipient can still react, but they will need to log into the platform.

Type

  • Mark complete: The recipient (student) of the Pulse notification can mark the Pulse activity as completed by opening the tokenized link in the e-mail. This option is available only when ‘Mark as complete by student to complete this activity” is enabled in the section ‘Completion conditions’.

  • Rate: The recipient of the Pulse notification can rate the Pulse activity with a thumps up or thumps down directly inside the e-mail.

  • Approve: The recipient (selected role) of the Pulse notification can mark the Pulse activity as completed by opening the tokenized link in the e-mail. This option is available only when ‘Require approval by one of the following roles’ is enabled in the section ‘Completion conditions’, and a role is selected. The selected role in the completion conditions will be the recipient of the notification and will have the ability to approve the student’s completion.

Location

  • Notification only: Displays the reaction only in the emails that recipients receive.

  • Both: Displays the reaction in the email that recipients receive and in the content section of the Pulse activity.

  • Content only: Displays the reaction only in the content section of the Pulse activity.

Invitation

The invitation is the email that recipients will receive once the Pulse activity is available to the user.

  • Send Pulse notification: When enabled, the invitation will be sent to the recipients.

  • Use notification instead of general content: When enabled, the configured notification subject and content will be used for the invitation instead of the general content and title.

  • Notification subject: Enter the title in the text field that you wish to assign to the notification to briefly describe its content or purpose. This field supports placeholders.

  • Notification content: Enter the content in the text field that you wish to send to the recipients. The text field can be edited using the standard text editor of your Moodle installation. Additionally, the text field supports placeholders, allowing for adaptive content customization.

  • Notification recipients: The recipients are open to all user context roles and course context roles.

Reminders

The first, second, and recurring reminders can be configured in the same way as the invitation, with the additional setting Notification schedule.

  • The first and second reminder can be sent on a 'Fixed date' or a 'Relative date', meaning the reminder will be sent after the configured time has passed after the activity became available to the user.

  • The recurring reminder allows you to send a notification at a configured interval after the activity became available to the user.

Appearance

The appearance of the Pulse activity can be edited by adding a CSS class or by using preconfigured options.

CSS class

Adding an individual CSS class is an advanced feature and should only be used by users with the necessary proficiency.

Display mode

  • Normal: Only the content added in the general content area will be displayed.

  • Box: Content added in the general content area will be wrapped into a bootstrap alert. Selecting this option will open the ‘Box type’ and ‘Box icon’ settings.

  • Box type: This option allows you to choose from the following box types: primary, secondary, danger, warning, light, dark, and success. Each option will adjust the font and background colors of the Pulse activity in the Moodle course, based on the Bootstrap framework used in your Moodle installation. If you are unsure about the color scheme of your Moodle installation, feel free to test the different options and review the results in the course.

  • Box icon: The box icon is displayed next to the general content in the Moodle course and can be selected from a list of various options.

Mark as complete options

You can require a confirmation that will appear in a modal window when students attempt to mark the Pulse activity as complete. This prompt will only appear in the course if 'Mark as complete by student to complete this activity' is enabled in the completion conditions.

  • Button Text: You can select from 5 different options for the button text: ‘Mark as complete’, ‘Acknowledge’, ‘Confirm’, ‘Choose’ and ‘Approve’. This only changes the presentation of the confirmation button and has no functional impact.

  • Confirmation modal text: You can add text to the modal window that specifies what students are confirming when they attempt to mark the Pulse activity as complete.

Common module settings

In this section, you can configure standard module settings. For more details, refer to the official Moodle documentation.

Restrict access

The availability of a Pulse activity can be restricted by one or more parameters. Configuring restrictions follows the standard settings in Moodle. For more information, refer to the official Moodle documentation.

Completion conditions

  • None: No conditions are set for the completion of the activity.

  • Students must manually mark the activity as done: Students must manually mark the activity as done. This is Moodle's default setting, allowing students to revoke completion at any time. Selecting this option opens the ‘Set reminder in timeline” setting.

  • Add requirements: Selecting this option more settings will appear.

  • Completion when available: The activity will be considered completed once it is available to the user. The availability can be controlled by configuring the access restrictions.

  • Mark as complete by student to complete this activity: Students must manually mark the activity as done. This is a Pulse inherent setting. Once a student marks the activity as complete, they cannot undo that decision.

  • Require approval by one of the following roles: The activity will be considered completed when any of the selected roles approves the user.

  • Set reminder in timeline: The reminder will appear at the configured time in the timeline block of the student's dashboard as ‘Pulse requires action’.

Tags

Adding tags can help categorize and organize Pulse activities for administrative purposes.

Competencies

This option allows you to link competencies with the Pulse activity. This is only possible if competencies have been added to the course. For further information on implementing and using competencies, please refer to the official Moodle documentation.
