Usually, Social Security cards arrive in the mail automatically after other documents (EAD, Green Card, etc.) within 15-30 days. However, sometimes SS cards can be delayed. If you do not receive your SS card within 4 weeks of your EAD approval (AOS) or arrival to the US (Consular), you should make an appointment at the Social Security Administration to apply for a new SS card.

Why do I need a SS card?

Your Social Security Number will be your primary identification number in the US. You will use it for everything from getting paid for your job, filling out taxes, paying for rent and utilities bills, and receiving health care. You will also need the SS card at many state DMVs (Department of Motor Vehicles) to take care of any business relating to your car or driver’s license.

You may receive a paper from the SSA that states you can work using that paper while you wait for the actual SS card, this is a temporary document and it can be complex to use it for onboarding at a job. BDV's policy is that you must have the SS card in your hand before starting work. This will make sure you do not have any problems starting work with your sponsor. You should not start work without your SS card in-hand.

When should I apply for my SS card?

Apply as soon as you get your EAD/Green Card (for AOS clients) or as soon as you arrive in the US (for Consular clients). You should make an appointment within the first week and continue calling if you can’t get an appointment. Continue calling until you receive the chance to apply. Persistence is key!

What if the SS office isn’t answering or they don’t have openings for applications?
You can try to go to another SSA office in another city or state. Often the SSA offices in large cities are backed up with too many customers. Trying an office in a smaller town may help.

What documents should I show?
See this article on the Social Security website: https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm and click on “Noncitizen.” Please do not send any original documents in the mail. Contact your local SSA office to ask about leaving documents in a secure drop box or arranging an in-person appointment.

I don’t have a permanent/secure address right now. Where can I have my card sent to?

To expedite secure delivery, please feel free to utilize our office addresses for your Social Security card. Upon receipt, we will immediately notify and deliver these to you. This can help you avoid significant delays.

I already have an old SS card; can I use it?

Yes, you can use the old SS card. It may say "Valid for Work only with DHS Authorization." That DHS Authorization is your EAD, visa, or Green Card. If you already have a SS card, there is no need to apply for another SS card. However, a new SS card may come in the mail anyway and you can use that one too. (It will not have the same phrase printed on it.)

How can I keep my SS card safe?

Please see this article for more info on securing your personal documents.
