Melanotan I is a synthetic peptide being studied for its ability to stimulate the body’s natural melanin production, which may increase skin pigmentation and provide some protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It was originally developed as a potential treatment for people with photosensitivity disorders and has been researched for its role in pigmentation and sun tolerance.


How It Works

Melanotan I is an analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a natural hormone that regulates melanin production in the skin.

It works by activating the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) in melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment.

When this receptor is activated:

• The body increases melanin production
• Skin may develop darker pigmentation over time
• The additional melanin may provide some protection against UV radiation

Because it mimics a natural hormone pathway, Melanotan I essentially signals the skin to produce more of its own protective pigment.

In research studies, Melanotan I was investigated for conditions such as erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), where patients experience severe pain from sunlight exposure.

The peptide itself has a relatively shorter active window, which is why injections in research protocols are typically administered daily.
