What is Popcorn Bidding?

Popcorn Bidding, also called “time extension bidding,” is a dynamic auction feature that automatically extends the bidding window whenever a bid is placed near the end of the auction. Typically:

  1. If a bid lands within the final few minutes, the auction extends by a preset time (e.g., 5 minutes).

  2. Each new bid during that extension resets the clock.

  3. The item only closes once there’s a lull—no bids—for the full duration of the extension.

Why It's Great 🔥

  • Fairness: Prevents “sniping” by allowing all bidders to respond.

  • Engagement: Keeps momentum and excitement alive, often increasing final bids.

How It Works on BirdEase Pro

1. Enabling Popcorn Bidding

  • Navigate to Auction → Items.

  • Click the edit pencil next to your auction set(s).

  • If you haven't already, toggle Set Auction to Auto Close and set your date & time.

  • Scroll down and toggle Enable Popcorn Bidding, then set your desired extension length (e.g., 5 minutes).

  • Click Update Auction to apply changes.

2. Automatic Time Extensions

Once enabled:

  • Bids placed during the final X minutes trigger a new X‑minute extension from the latest bid’s timestamp.

  • Extension continues with each bid until no bids come in during the full period.

3. Auction Closing

  • Item closes only after a period without bids equal to the chosen extension time.

  • Ensures a fair opportunity window and prevents last-second snipes.

Tips for Running Golf Tournament Auctions

Here are essential strategies to maximize engagement and donations:

A. Promotion & Timing

  • Pre-event awareness: Start online bidding before the tournament begins to build excitement

  • House rules visible: Clearly state Popcorn Bidding rules and extension times.

B. Bidding Increments

  • Use sensible increments—too small, and items linger unsold; too big, and you deter bids

FAQs

Q: Can I disable Popcorn Bidding mid-auction?
Yes. Before the auction’s end, turn off the toggle to lock the final close time.

Q: What’s a good extension duration?
3–5 minutes is common, but you can adjust based on your event's pace or audience size.

Q: Does it apply to all items?
Yes, it will be applied to all items.

Summary

Popcorn Bidding enhances fairness, increases excitement, and helps drive fundraising success by:

  • Automatically extending bidding when action heats up.

  • Giving every bidder a fair chance.

  • Discouraging “sniping” and maintaining momentum.

By embedding Popcorn Bidding into your BirdEase auction setup and promoting it properly—with clear rules and strong item packages—you’ll host a more engaging and profitable event.
