Tax Optimization: unrealized gains and losses

The Tax Optimization shows the current gains and losses of all your existing asset tranches and their holding period. This way, before a sale you see which holdings are tax-free, where losses are, and what a sale would trigger for tax purposes.

Depending on your tax country, you can use it to realize gains and losses deliberately in order to optimize your tax burden within a year (offsetting gains and losses).

Tax country

What the tax optimization helps with

Germany

Crypto assets can be sold tax-free after a 365-day holding period. You see which tranches already qualify.

Austria

Old holdings (bought before 01.03.2021) stay tax-free. Everything bought from 01.03.2021 on is new holdings and, with the transition period of 01.03.2022, no longer reaches tax exemption.

Before you start: is your data complete?

Like your tax report, the calculation is based on a complete and error-free transaction history. If tips block it, resolve them first.

ℹ️ Good to know: Always sync all integrations first with Sync All (Dashboard › Integrations tab) and then start Calculation in the sidebar before you analyze tips or performance values.

⚠️ Caution: If deposits and withdrawals are not correctly linked as a transfer, the acquisition date and cost basis are not passed from one integration to the other. The holding period and the gain are then wrong.

How do I use the tax optimization feature, and what should I pay special attention to?

1️⃣ In the sidebar, open Tax Optimization and click Calculation to refresh the display.

2️⃣ You see all assets with quantity, cost basis, market value and gain/loss, sorted by highest gain. Reverse the sorting to see losses first.

3️⃣ Narrow it down with the filters to specific assets or tax types (simulated sale at the current time). This way you find all tax-free assets or filter by the performance type gain/loss.

4️⃣ Click an asset and then an integration. Now you see the individual tranches (transactions) with date, tax type, quantity, cost basis, market value and gain/loss.

5️⃣ If you want to realize or offset gains or losses, note: in each integration, the oldest asset tranche is always sold first. It is at the very top of the list.

ℹ️ Good to know: The underlying tax logic for Germany (order) is called FIFO (First In – First Out) and applies to each integration separately (integration segregation).

⚠️ Caution: You cannot use tax-free assets to offset gains or losses you have already realized, because selling them is tax-free.

ℹ️ Austria: For new holdings (tranches from 01.03.2021), Blockpit uses the shared cost basis method average price. You recognize them by the tax type.

Tips

▸ Holdings: Blockpit calculates the displayed asset balance (quantity) only from your imported transactions. It corresponds to the calculated balance.

▸ Live values: The green and red unrealized gains and losses are live. You only need a new calculation if transactions or holdings have changed.

▸ Simulate a sale: Test the tax consequences of a sale with the quick simulation or by selecting individual exchanges, assets or tranches.

Typical mistakes

✗ Analyzed without syncing first → holdings and gains are outdated

✗ Sold a tranche on a different exchange than planned → because of integration segregation, the oldest tranche of exactly that integration counts

✗ Sold a tax-free tranche to offset losses → its result does not count for tax purposes
