BoomScreen: How to use Discount Codes

Written by Partnerships Team
Updated yesterday

BoomScreen lets you create discount codes to reduce or waive application fees for prospective renters. Use them to run promotions that help fill vacant units, incentivize applicants with time-bound discounts, or waive fees for specific renters. With discount codes, you can easily create, apply, and manage offers for new applicants, invited applicants, and applicants that have “in progress” applications.

Key capabilities:

  • Create re-usable discount codes for specified screening templates

  • Create one-time custom discounts for individual applicant(s)

  • Set permissions for which users can apply active discount codes and/or custom discount codes

How to get started with discount codes

Admins on your account can create and manage discount codes, set which templates the discount code is available for, and manually apply custom discount codes to applications as needed. Property managers can add discount codes to applications and applicants, if given permission (SettingsUsersselect a user → check Apply active discount code/Apply custom discount code)

To view and manage discount codes, navigate to Screening settingsDiscount codes (Figure 1). This is where you can review existing discount codes and their configuration.

Create a discount code for your portfolio or selected template(s)

To create a discount code, navigate to Screening settingsDiscount codes → Create discount code (Figure 2). From there, you will be able to customize:

  • What the discount code is (or generate a random code)

  • The discount type (flat, percentage of application fee, or free) and the discount amount

  • Which templates to apply the discount code to

  • When the discount code is active (end date optional)

To apply a discount code to your entire portfolio, click Select all when choosing which templates to apply to a template. Please note: This will only apply the discount code to existing templates, not future ones.

Add a discount code to another template

To add a discount code to another template, go to Screening settings → select a template → Discount codes → Add discount code (Figure 3).

Please note: Once added to a template, the discount code will only be available for new applicants, not applicants that have already started their application.

Applying a discount code for an applicant

To apply a discount to an individual applicant, go to Applicationsselect an applicant → click Apply discount. From there, you can select the active discount code to apply to the application. The available discounts will show you what discount codes are currently active and available for the property template (Figure 4).

Note: Discounts can only be applied to “invited” or “in progress" applications.

You can also create custom discounts for individual applicants as a one-time use discount code. To do so, go to Applications → select an applicant → click Apply discount → Custom discounts (Figure 5). From there, you can select the discount type, amount, and expiration date (optional).

Applicant experience

When discount codes are active, applicants will be able to self apply discount codes during the checkout process (Figure 6). This allows your team to market discount codes to help drive application submission volume.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Can discount codes be applied to submitted applications? No, discount codes can only be applied to invited and in process applications. If you want to discount the application fee of an applicant that has already paid, you can issue a full or partial refund.

  2. Are discount codes case sensitive? Yes, discount codes are case sensitive and cannot contain spaces.

  3. What does the end date for a one-time custom discount code do? If the applicant has not submitted their application before the expiration date, the discount code will no longer be applied.

  4. How long is a discount code valid? It depends on how you configured the discount code. If you don’t select an end date, the code will be valid until it’s deleted or edited. If you select an end date, the discount code stays valid up until that date. On the end date itself, the code is no longer active for your applicants or team.
