Bandwidth Requirements and Speed Testing

Boostlingo's bandwidth requirements for calls, how to test your internet speed, and tips for better audio and video quality.

Written by Quinn Bott

Bandwidth requirements

  • Ideal: 25+ Mbps upstream, 3+ Mbps downstream.

  • Recommended: 5+ Mbps upstream, 3+ Mbps downstream.

  • Minimum: 2 Mbps upstream and downstream.

Test your speed

Go to www.speedtest.net and follow the on-screen instructions. For further troubleshooting steps, see Troubleshooting Boostlingo on a Computer Browser.

Tips for better calls

Audio calls work on most connections. Video calls use a lot more bandwidth, so if you're having issues with video quality, try the following:

  • Close other apps or tabs using bandwidth, especially music or video.

  • Cancel any in-progress file transfers.

  • Limit internet use on other devices on your Wi-Fi.

  • Use an Ethernet connection when possible.

If this doesn't resolve the problem, you may need to increase your bandwidth. Contact your Internet Service Provider for help with your download and upload speeds.

A note on cellular bandwidth

4G LTE connections and mobile hotspots are sufficient for most situations with an adequate connection to your LTE service provider. LTE quality is heavily influenced by your location and by the number of other users connected to the same cell tower. Interpreters should always rely on wired internet service over LTE service for consistent network quality.

3G connections and mobile hotspots are not recommended, but may be sufficient for two-party calls when the 3G connection is not in use by other internet applications and you have a strong connection to your 3G service provider.
