How to integrate your system with Clevertap

Step 1: Check Zapier compatibility

Make sure the system you want to connect (CRM, form tool, payment system, etc.) supports Zapier. You can check at Zapier’s website under “Integrations” for that system.

Step 2: Create a Zapier account

If you don’t have one, go to zapier.com and sign up. You’ll use this account to build the automation (“Zap”) that links your system to CleverTap.

Step 3: Create the Zap

In Zapier:

  • Click + Create Zap.

  • Choose your system as the Trigger (for example: “New lead in CRM”).
    ​

  • Later, you’ll set CleverTap as the Action (what happens when the trigger fires).

Step 4: Get your CleverTap connection details

Log into your CleverTap dashboard. Go to Settings → Project (or similar) and find your Account ID and Passcode (CleverTap uses header-based authentication). Gather these details so you can connect CleverTap from Zapier.

Step 5: Connect CleverTap in Zapier

Back in Zapier’s action step:

  • Select “CleverTap”.

  • Choose either “Create/Update User Profile” or “Upload Event” depending on your goal.
    ​

  • Enter the CleverTap Account ID and Passcode when prompted.
    ​

  • Proceed to map your data fields (identity, event name, properties, etc.)

Step 6: Decide if it’s a User Property or a User Event

  • User Property: Use this if you are updating attributes like “first name”, “subscription status”. These are stable details about the user.
    ​

  • User Event: Use this if you are sending an action the user takes, such as “Trial Started”, or “Billing Issue”. These describe something the user did at a moment in time.

Step 7: Test and activate

  • Run the trigger test in Zapier to make sure data passes correctly.
    ​

  • Verify in CleverTap that the user profile was updated or the event was logged.
    ​

  • Once verified, Publish or Turn On your Zap so it runs automatically going forward.

User Properties & Events

As you may have seen, in this document there are automatic user properties and events. Use the guide to know if you should use user properties or events when adding segmentation to Clevertap.

User Properties - This is something that is more permanent like a First name, last name, subscription status

User Event - This is in real time something that occurs. Started Trial, or billing issue detected
