Overview
If you sell the same item in more than one colour or size, create it once and add its colours and sizes. bsport then creates one option for every combination that members can buy, and members pick the one they want before adding it to their basket.
Use this when the product is genuinely the same item in different colours and/or sizes, like a t-shirt in 3 colours and 4 sizes. For a single item with no choices, leave the colours and sizes fields empty and the product stays a product with no colours or sizes.
Expect one product to manage, one card in your webshop, and separate stock, prices and barcodes behind each choice.
This applies to the current bsport webshop, which is being rolled out along with the updated back office. If your product form does not show a second step after you select Continue, your studio may not have it enabled yet, and support can confirm.
If your studio is part of a franchise, whether it is enabled is decided by your franchisor rather than locally.
Before you start
A few things are worth knowing before you turn a product into one with colours and sizes.
Colour and size names cannot be changed after they are created. Check your spelling in the second step. To correct one afterwards, delete that line and add the colour or size again, which also removes that line's stock history.
Adding colours and sizes to a product you already sell makes its earlier stock history, current stock and total sales inaccessible to you. The new product with variants effectively starts fresh. If you are moving from a set of separate products to one product with options, plan to redo the setup by hand.
You cannot turn an option back into its own product, and you cannot turn an existing product into an option of another product.
Products with colours and sizes cannot be added to packs.
Duplicate is not available for a product that has colours and sizes.
A product with colours and sizes has a payment page link for each option, not one for the whole product.
bsport checks that a barcode is not already in use. If it is, you get a warning and you have to change the barcode before you can save.
Set up the product
Creating the product takes 2 steps.
Fill in the product form as usual (name, price, image, and the SKU and supplier fields at the end). The save button reads "Continue" and opens the second step.
In the second step, enter your colours and sizes. Separate multiple values with a comma, for example "Black, White, Navy" and "S, M, L, XL". Leave both fields empty to create a product with no colours or sizes.
The number of options created is colours multiplied by sizes. 3 colours and 4 sizes create 12 options, and the save button reads "Save a product with 12 variants". Check the number matches what you expect.
If you enter the same value twice you will see "This colour has already been added." or "This size has already been added."
Once the product is created, its page opens with a product section on top and 3 tabs.
Inventory holds stock, one line per colour and size.
Variants lists every colour and size, with its image, price, supplier price, SKU, barcode, availability online and row actions. This article calls these your product's options. The tab keeps the label Variants in the back office.
Settings holds the settings that apply to the whole product.
Options are always listed alphabetically by colour first, then by size.
To edit prices, supplier prices, SKUs, barcodes or images, use the single Edit button on the Variants tab. It puts the whole table into edit mode at once. If you leave the page with unsaved changes, bsport asks you to save or discard them.
To add more colours or sizes later, select Add a variant on the Variants tab.
Combinations that already exist are not created again, and you will see "Some colour and size combinations already exist and will not be created again."
Capitalisation is ignored when bsport checks for duplicates, and the existing spelling wins. If you already have White in L, M and S and you add "Black" with "l, m, s", you get Black L, Black M and Black S.
What is set once, what is per option
3 groups decide where you change something.
Set once on the product, the same for every option
Name, subtitle, description, supplier, category, VAT, featured product, accepted payment methods, requires delivery, and the studios it is sold in on a Master Account.
Set on the product, but changeable for a single option
Price, supplier price, image, and available online.
Set only on each option
Colour, size, payment page link, total sales, current stock, barcode and SKU.
Two of these are easy to get wrong.
Price. As soon as you type a price on an individual option, that option stops following the product price. Later changes to the product price will not reach it. You have to update that option yourself.
Available online. If the product is set to not available online, none of its options are available online either, whatever their own setting says. When the product is available online, you can still switch off a single option, for example a size you have stopped stocking.
SKUs and barcodes start empty on each option, so fill them in yourself if you use them. Once a product has colours and sizes, the product-level SKU and barcode rows no longer appear in Settings.
Manage stock
Stock lives on the Inventory tab, not on the Variants tab.
The tab shows one line per colour and size, and one line per studio as well if you are on a Master Account. Filter by colour and size to find a line quickly. All values are selected by default.
If your studio sells across several locations, stock is tracked separately for each location, so choose the right location before you adjust anything. The separate article on managing webshop stock covers how that works.
Each line has a "Current stock" column and a "Stock adjustment (+/-)" column. Enter your adjustments, then select "Update inventory". The adjustment is added to the current stock and the adjustment field resets to 0. The list shows 15 lines per page, and if you leave with unsaved adjustments bsport asks you to update or discard them.
What members see when they buy
In the shop listing, the product appears as one card using the product image, not one card per colour. Under the name, the card shows how many choices there are.
Colours, or colours and sizes together, show as "X colours".
Sizes only show as "X sizes".
If the options have different prices, the card shows "Starting at" the lowest price.
Selecting "Add to basket" on a card with options opens the product page instead of adding anything straight to the basket.
On the product page, members see the name, subtitle, image, a colour selector, a size selector, the description and the price. A selector only appears if that kind of choice exists for sale, so a product with colours only shows one selector.
Nothing is selected when the page opens, and "Add to cart" stays disabled until a full choice is made. Colour comes first, and the size selector stays inactive until a colour is picked. Every colour and size stays visible, but combinations you do not sell are greyed out and cannot be selected.
The price and the picture update with the choice. The name, subtitle and description never change. If a member changes colour and the new colour is not available in the size they picked, the size resets and the picture goes back to the product image.
An option with a colour but no size (or the other way round) shows as a dash.
Whether an out-of-stock combination can still be bought depends on a studio-wide stock setting (in your bsport settings). Where the setting blocks it, the combination cannot be selected and shows "Out of stock."
In the basket, at checkout and on the confirmation, the chosen colour and size appear on a second line under the product name, and the price shown is the price of that option.
FAQ
I sell a t-shirt in 3 colours but only one size. Do I have to fill both fields?
No. Fill in the colours field and leave the sizes field empty. Members will see a colour selector only.
Can I charge more for one colour?
Yes. Set the price on that line on the Variants tab. That line then keeps its own price and no longer follows the product price.
Members cannot see my product in the shop. What should I check first?
Check "Available online" in Settings on the product. If the product is set to no, none of its options are visible online, even if the options themselves are set to yes.
How do I go back to a single product with no choices?
Delete every colour and size line one by one from the Actions menu at the end of each row. This is not available on a mobile back office. The product becomes a single product again with no colours or sizes, and its original stock history, current stock and total sales come back. The stock history of the deleted lines is lost.
Where do I set stock for each colour and size?
On the Inventory tab of the product, not on the Variants tab.
