How to obtain a DUNS number

This guide explains how to check for an existing D-U-N-S number, apply for a new one, and includes updates for specific markets such as Italy and Spain. It also covers troubleshooting tips for Apple Developer accounts and alternative request methods.

Why a D-U-N-S number is required

To publish apps on Google Play Store (organizational account) and Apple App Store, a D-U-N-S Number is required. This unique 9-digit identifier, issued by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), verifies your business’s legal identity.

Cross-platform note: A single D-U-N-S number can be used for verification on both Google and Apple platforms.

1. What is a D-U-N-S Number?

A D-U-N-S number is a unique 9-digit identifier that verifies a company’s legal existence. Some companies receive a D-U-N-S automatically, while others need to request it.

2. Why You Need a D-U-N-S Number

Google Developer Account (GDA)

  • Required for organizational accounts to pass Google’s identity verification.

  • Mandatory for publishing Android apps under a company name.

  • Ensures smoother, faster app deployment versus a personal account.

⚠️ Note for sole proprietors/freelancers: If you cannot obtain a D-U-N-S number, you may use a personal Google Developer Account, which will publish apps under your personal name.

Apple Developer Program (ADP)

  • Required for all organization-type enrollees to verify legal entity status.

  • A D-U-N-S number ensures your account is recognized as a verified organization.

3. Steps to Obtain a D-U-N-S Number

Follow these steps to check for and request your number.

Step 1: Check if Your Company Already Has One

  1. If your company is registered in France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, or Morocco

    • D&B has delegated exclusive D-U-N-S verification in these countries to its official partner Verif

    • Obtain your D-U-N-S via Verif — mandatory one-time fee of €39 (excl. VAT)

  2. If your company is located in another country

    1. Search by either:

      1. Company registration number and country, or

      2. Legal company name and country

    2. If the company appears:

      1. Click Email to receive your D-U-N-S number

    3. If the company does not appear, it likely does not yet have a D-U-N-S number.

Step 2: Apply for a D-U-N-S Number (if not found)

  • Create an account and submit your business information:

    • Business name

    • Address

    • Ownership

    • Industry

  • Verification typically takes a few days, but can vary by country.

  • Some countries may have additional costs (Italy, Spain, Morocco, etc.)

Alternative method: If the online system does not work, you can email D&B support at support@dnb.com with your company details to request a D-U-N-S number manually.

Country-Specific Updates:

  • Italy: The Italian market now uses CRIBIS to request a D-U-N-S number.

  • Spain: The Spanish market uses Informa for D-U-N-S requests.

  • Morocco: Requires applying through an authorized D&B representative; may involve fees up to $500 USD.

4. Important Country-Specific Note: Morocco

The process for companies based in Morocco is not always automatic through the standard website.

  • If the lookup tool does not find your number and the online application system does not work, you will likely need to apply through an authorized D&B representative in your region.

  • ⚠️ Please be aware: This request may involve a fee, which can be up to $500 USD.

Final Recommendation

Keep information updated: Ensure that your business information is current and accurate in the D&B database. This helps maintain your business credit file accurately.

Troubleshooting D-U-N-S Verification Issues

If your app publishing process is blocked due to D-U-N-S verification issues, a practical workaround is available:

  1. Create an individual Apple Developer account initially.

  2. After successful setup, request Apple to upgrade it to a professional or organization account. This bypasses the D-U-N-S verification at the onset, simplifying the process for businesses.

⚠️ Troubleshooting tip:

  • If Apple does not recognize your D-U-N-S number:

    • Double-check your company’s legal name and country.

    • Ensure the D-U-N-S number is active and corresponds to your legal entity.

    • Contact Apple Developer Support if verification fails.
