What is the difference between a registered agent and a commercial registered agent?

The term commercial is a regulatory label, not a different type of service.

The term “commercial registered agent” is used in some states as a formal classification. The difference is mostly administrative:

  • A registered agent is any person or company appointed to receive legal and official mail for a business.

  • A commercial registered agent is a business that:

    • Registers with the state as a professional registered agent provider, and

    • Often represents many companies at the same address.
