Everything you need to know if your tenant is using Chexy to pay rent via e‑Transfer

  1. Will I still get my rent by Interac e‑Transfer?
    Yes, exact same process as always. No new accounts. No apps to download.

  2. Will Chexy report payments to the CRA?
    No. Chexy does not share any details with the CRA or any other third party.

  3. Is this a scam or risky?
    Not at all. Chexy simply acts as an intermediary. Your tenant pays Chexy with their credit card, and Chexy sends you a regular Interac e‑Transfer. That’s it.

What is Chexy, and why is your tenant using it?

Your tenant is using Chexy, a Canadian payment platform that lets them pay rent with their credit card to earn rewards, build credit, and automate payments.

As a landlord, you don’t need to do anything. You’ll still receive rent via Interac e‑Transfer, just like always. You don’t need to sign up for Chexy or make any changes on your end.

Chexy tenants are more likely to pay rent on time

We charge their credit card three days before rent is due, which gives enough time to resolve any issues. Payments are automatically scheduled to be sent to you on the rent date, meaning that paying rent is “set it and forget it”, and delays are much less common.

How it works

  • Your tenant enters your regular e‑Transfer email in Chexy

  • Chexy sends the payment via Interac e‑Transfer

  • You receive the transfer from notify@payments.interac.ca, just like a normal bank transfer

  • Optionally, your tenant can add a custom memo to identify the payment (e.g. “Mark Apt 2B”)

  • Transfers go out every day at 1 PM EST, even on weekends and holidays

What about security and privacy?

  • Chexy does not share your information with the CRA

  • We do not report rent payments or landlord details to any third party

  • Your email is used only to send the Interac transfer—just like a regular rent payment

How to deposit the rent

If you have auto-deposit enabled:

  • The money is deposited automatically and you’ll receive a confirmation email from Interac

If you don’t use auto-deposit:

  • Click the link in the Interac email

  • Enter the security answer provided by your tenant

  • If you don’t know it, simply ask your tenant

Interac emails typically arrive within 6–8 hours. If you don’t see it, check your spam folder or wait until 8 PM EST.

Questions or Issues?

  • Didn’t get the transfer?
    Check spam/junk folders and wait until 8 PM EST—Interac can take time. Confirm your email is correct with your tenant.

  • Wrong security answer or expired transfer?
    Transfers expire after 7 days or after 3 incorrect attempts. Your tenant can contact Chexy to have it reissued within 24–48 hours.
