Control your Claap notification preferences
Learning objective
By the end of this tutorial, you'll know how to configure email and Slack notification preferences, and follow or unfollow notifications for specific topics, claap videos, and comment threads so you receive only the alerts that matter to you.
Why this matters
Unconfigured notifications create noise that makes it easy to miss activity that actually requires your attention. Claap gives you three distinct layers of notification control global preferences, per-topic settings, and per-thread settings so you can tune the signal-to-noise ratio at whatever level of granularity you need.
Prerequisites
You should already have:
A Claap account with access to at least one workspace
Claap connected to Slack if you want to manage Slack notifications (see Connect Claap and Slack)
Core Lesson — Step-by-Step Workflow
Phase 1: Configure global notification preferences in Personal Settings
Your global notification preferences control what Claap sends you by email and Slack across your entire workspace. Changes here apply to all claap videos and topics unless overridden at the topic or thread level.
Step 1: Open your Personal Settings
Go to your Claap workspace and navigate to [Personal Settings].
This is where both email and Slack notification preferences are managed from a single location.
Step 2: Set your email notification preferences
In [Personal Settings], locate the email notifications section. Enable or disable each of the following triggers individually:
Someone comments on a claap you're following
Someone replies in a thread you're following
Someone @mentions you in a comment or reply
Someone adds an in-context reaction to your claaps
Someone watches your claaps for the first time
Someone invites you to a claap
Someone adds a claap to a topic you're following
A claap you uploaded is ready to watch
Enabling only the triggers relevant to your role reduces inbox volume without missing important activity.
Step 3: Set your Slack notification preferences
In [Personal Settings], locate the Slack notifications section. Slack notifications currently work as a single on/off toggle — Claap does not offer granular per-event Slack notification controls.
When enabled, Claap sends Slack notifications for mentions, comments, and first views.
Verify: After saving, send a test comment on a claap you follow and confirm you receive (or do not receive) the notification in your configured channel.
Phase 2: Manage notifications for a specific topic
Topic-level notification settings override your global preferences for that topic. Use this when you want more or less coverage for a particular project or team channel.
Step 4: Open topic notification preferences
Navigate to the topic you want to configure. Click [...] (the three-dot menu) in the topic header.
Step 5: Choose your topic notification level
Select one of the available notification levels for the topic:
All new claaps — Claap notifies you whenever a new claap is added to this topic. This is the default when you create a topic or are added as a member.
@mentions only — Claap notifies you only when someone @mentions you in a comment within this topic.
Choose @mentions only for high-volume topics where you don't need to review every new recording.
Phase 3: Manage notifications for a specific claap or comment thread
Claap-level and thread-level settings give you the most granular control — useful when a single video or conversation becomes noisy.
Step 6: Adjust notifications for a specific claap video
Open the claap video you want to configure. Locate the notification settings for that claap.
Select your preferred level:
All comments and replies — default for claaps you created or were added to as a member or guest
@mentions only — reduces noise on busy claaps while keeping direct alerts active
Step 7: Unfollow or follow a specific comment thread
Open the claap video containing the thread. Click [...] (the three-dot menu) next to the comment thread.
To stop receiving notifications for that thread: click [Turn off notifications for replies]
To resume notifications for that thread: click the same [...] menu and select [Get notified about new replies]
You can also follow threads on claaps you have not previously interacted with by using the same steps to enable notifications.
Practical application
Example: A sales manager reducing noise on a high-volume demo library topic
Situation: A sales manager is a member of a Claap topic used to store all customer demo recordings. New claaps are added daily by the full sales team.
Goal: Receive notifications only when directly mentioned, rather than for every new recording added to the topic.
How they configured it:
In [Personal Settings], kept email notifications enabled for @mentions and first views, and disabled notifications for "new claap added to a topic I'm following"
Opened the demo library topic, clicked [...], and switched the topic notification level to @mentions only
On one high-activity claap with an ongoing comment thread, clicked [...] on the thread and selected [Turn off notifications for replies]
Result: The sales manager now receives email alerts only when a teammate directly @mentions them, and no longer receives daily digest emails for every new demo recording.
