Recent updates to NESA’s professional development (PD) requirements have introduced new ways for teachers in New South Wales to maintain their accreditation. Whether you’re already familiar with NESA or are seeking to understand how these changes impact you, this article provides a clear breakdown of the updates and how ClassCover Learn can support your professional development journey.

Key Changes to NESA PD Requirements

As of 16 August 2024, significant updates have been made to the PD requirements for teachers maintaining Proficient, Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation with NESA. These changes simplify the PD process while maintaining high standards for teacher growth. Below are the highlights:

Revised Priority Categories

  • NESA has removed the Accredited and Elective PD categories, offering teachers more flexibility in completing their required 100 hours of professional development.

  • While priority areas are no longer mandatory, they remain as helpful guidelines to focus on components of effective teaching.

What You No Longer Need to Do:

  • Complete a minimum amount of Accredited PD.

  • Complete PD from across the four mandatory priority areas.

  • Write evaluations for completed Accredited PD courses.

  • Align PD activities against the 37 Standard Descriptors. Activities now align with one or more of the seven Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (the Standards).

What Stays the Same:

  • Teachers are still required to complete 100 hours of PD to maintain accreditation.

  • Any PD hours already completed, whether Accredited or Elective, will contribute towards your current maintenance cycle.

  • The requirements for Proficient, Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers are now unified, and Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers no longer have minimum professional commitment requirements.

  • NESA has developed the NESA Professional Development Framework to help you select, implement, and reflect on effective PD activities.
