What happens when a subscriber's payment fails?

Payment failures are normal and nothing to worry about. Stripe handles the recovery process automatically.

Automatic retries

When a payment fails, Stripe automatically retries it up to 8 times over a 14-day period. Stripe's machine learning optimises the retry timing, which means recovery rates are generally very high. If a subscriber has not paid after two weeks, their account will be cancelled.

Enabling failed payment email reminders

  1. Go to dashboard.stripe.com/settings/billing/automatic

  2. Scroll to Manage failed payments

  3. Toggle on Send emails to customers to update failed card payment methods

  4. Click Save

Adjusting retry settings

Stripe's default is 8 retries over 14 days. If you prefer fewer retries, you can adjust this in your Stripe dashboard under Revenue Recovery, then Retries.
