Grade totals discrepancy

Learn how to troubleshoot a gradebook total discrepancy

Updated over 7 months ago

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to troubleshoot a grade discrepancy due to a settings error

Note

The grade totals may differ between the Grader report and the User report because of a setting under Course Grade Settings in the gradebook.

At the bottom of the page, look for Hide totals if they contain hidden items in the User report section. The default is set to Show totals excluding hidden items.

Information about setting:

This setting specifies whether totals which contain hidden grade items are shown to students or replaced with a hyphen (-). If shown, the total may be calculated either excluding or including hidden items.

If hidden items are excluded, the total will be different to the total seen by the teacher in the grader report since the teacher always sees totals calculated from all items, hidden or unhidden. If hidden items are included, students may be able to calculate the hidden items.

Procedures

Set the Grader Report and User Report to display the same totals:

  1. Make sure you do not have any hidden items in your course. Gradebook: Hidden Grades

    1. Moodle may see items from external tools, such as Pearson, as hidden items. If this is the case, you can not unhide them, see option two.

  2. Change the Hide totals if they contain hidden items setting to Show totals including hidden items.

    1. This option allows both the Grader report and User report to display the same grade, but the grade will appear artificially low since it includes items that are not due yet in the grade calculation.
