Standard Course Copy

How to copy your courses from one course to another

Updated over 7 months ago

Purpose

This article describes the steps to copy all the content from one course to another.

Note

If you need a combined course shell, you have to submit a combined course request before you can copy your own course.

Please copy courses at least two weeks before the start of the semester. This will give us enough time to troubleshoot and resolve problems, should they arise.

Contact us immediately if you get an error message.

It is best practice to use the five-digit or nine-digit CRN to search for courses that you need to copy from.

The CRN is at the end of the course title on your course page.

Procedure

Setup

  • In one browser tab, open the course you are copying from. Use this to find the CRN and refer back to it before you complete the copy process.

  • In another browser tab, open the course you are copying to. (It can also be helpful to write down both CRNs (e.g. From: 10000, To: 20000).

  • Set the Copy to course to the same format as the Copy from course. This is done in the course settings under Course format

Course Copy

Start with the course you are copying into

Click the More drop-down menu.

Select Course Reuse from the drop-down menu.

More Dropdown Menu with Course reuse selected

On the next page, make sure “Import” is selected from the dropdown in the upper left corner.

Course Reuse screen with arrow pointing to Import selected in the dropdown menu.

You might see the course you want to copy from in the list that displays.

If so, click on the radio button to select it and then click on the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

Otherwise, type the CRN of the From course into the search field at the bottom of that page.

Click on the Search button.

The From course should now display.

Click the radio button next to the course and click on the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

Course Import page

Select content to import

When copying your entire course into a blank course shell, keep all items checked on the Import settings page.

Click on the Jump to final step button at the bottom of the page.

Import settings page

(If you need to copy only specific items, you can refer to the instructions, Course Copy Specific Items.)

Do not close the window until completed.

You’ll see a confirmation when the copying is finished. Some courses can take as long as 20 minutes if you have a large question bank, or if your internet is slow.

Click the Continue button.

Finished import confirmation page

Remove any duplicates of activities that appear at the top of your course page. For example, you may have a duplicate of Announcements or Attendance.

Orphaned Activities

After the import is finished, review your course to ensure all the content is there.

Turn Editing On and check for Orphaned activities.

A quick way to reset each orphaned section is to click on the plus sign just below it, on the bottom left of the section.

Orphaned activities example

Another way to reset Orphaned Sections:

  • Scroll to the bottom of the course and note the section number in the last Orphaned section.

  • Scroll back to the top of the page and Settings.

  • Click Course format and set Number of sections to match the number of the last orphaned activity.

  • Click Save and display.

The Orphaned activities sections should now appear normal.

Dates report

Imported activities assign due dates based on the course start date. You can use the Dates report to update assignment and quiz dates.

Date report page
  • Click Reports and select Dates from the list.

  • Use the Activity type dropdown, to select all or one activity.

  • Find the activities in the sections listed and modify due dates, as needed.

  • Click Save changes at the bottom. Please wait on the page for a full minute after you click save - even if it appears to have completed the save.

Tutor.com

If your Tutor.com isn’t working correctly for students, follow these steps to update the link.

  • Turn Edit Mode On for the course.

  • Go to Edit Settings for the Tutor.com.

  • Select Tutor.com from the Preconfigured tool drop-down menu.

  • In the Privacy section, un-check the box, Accept grades from the tool (this may already be unchecked).

  • Click Save and return to course.

Panopto videos

Any Panopto videos you added to your Panopto course folder will copy with your course content. These videos can take up to 24 hours before they are visible in your course after they’ve been copied. If you do not see them after 24 hours, please contact the LMS Team.

Any instructors who you allow to copy your course will also have access to your videos in the copy. Please inform the LMS Team if you do not want to include your videos with the course copy.

Contact Moodle Support if you receive an error message, or encounter other problems when copying.
