Standard Course Copy

How to copy your courses from one course to another

Updated this week

Purpose

This article describes the steps to copy all the content from one course to another.

Note

If you need a combined course shell, you have to submit a combined course request before you can copy your own course.

Please copy courses at least two weeks before the start of the semester. This will give us enough time to troubleshoot and resolve problems, should they arise.

Contact us immediately if you get an error message.

It is best practice to use the five-digit or nine-digit CRN to search for courses that you need to copy from.

The CRN is at the end of the course title on your course page.

Procedure

Setup

  • In one browser tab, open the course you are copying from. Use this to find the CRN and refer back to it before you complete the copy process.

  • In another browser tab, open the course you are copying to. (It can also be helpful to write down both CRNs (e.g. From: 10000, To: 20000).

  • Set the Copy to course to the same format as the Copy from course. This is done in the course settings under Course format

Course Copy

Start with the course you are copying into

Click the More drop-down menu.

Select Course Reuse from the drop-down menu.

On the next page, select “Import” in the upper left corner.

You might see the course you want to copy from in the list that displays.

If so, click on the radio button to select it and then click on the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

Otherwise, type the CRN of the From course into the search field at the bottom of that page.

Click on the Search button.

The From course should now display.

Click the radio button next to the course and click on the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

Select content to import

When copying your entire course into a blank course shell, keep all items checked on the Import settings page.

Click on the Jump to final step button at the bottom of the page.

(If you need to copy only specific items, you can refer to the instructions, Course Copy Specific Items.)

Do not close the window until completed.

You’ll see a confirmation when the copying is finished. Some courses can take as long as 20 minutes if you have a large question bank, or if your internet is slow.

Click the Continue button.

Take a few minutes to review your course:

  • Dates: Update all the activity dates (Reports > Dates)

  • Gradebook: Check categories, hidden items, and overall setup

  • Duplicates: Remove extra/duplicate items (announcements, Tutor.com, etc.)

  • Content: Check images, audio, and links to ensure everything works

  • Quizzes: Verify that images, audio, and embedded media copied over correctly

  • Panopto Course Folder (if used): From the Panopto block, click “Provision Course” if needed

  • Respondus LockDown Browser (if used): Click on Dashboard

    • Important! Copied courses require instructors to access the LockDown Browser dashboard before exams can be taken by students.

  • Question Bank: Question banks can grow quickly after multiple course copies. Take time to organize if needed and reduce excessive categories.

    • Caution: Avoid deleting questions that are used in quizzes. Contact us for guidance on safe cleanup strategies.

Contact Moodle Support if you receive an error message or encounter other problems when copying.
