H5P: Important Settings

Learn about two important H5P settings

Updated over 7 months ago

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to highlight two important H5P settings

Procedures

  1. Link to the file

Arrow pointing selected radio button next to Link to the file

    Pros:

    • Any changes made to the H5P content in the Content Bank will automatically update in the H5P activity on the course page. No further action is required

    Cons:

    • Graphics-heavy files or large H5P files take longer to load on the course page. This can be problematic for students who have an unreliable or slow internet connection. If students don’t know to wait for the content to appear, they may navigate away from the resource

    • If you update the contents of an H5P module, the changes will also update in courses that have been copied from the current course. This may be undesirable if you need the content to be different for multiple sections of the same course

  2. Make a copy of the file:

Arrow pointing to selected radio button next to Make a copy of the file

Pros:

  • The H5P activity loads much faster (even for large files). Students will not have to wait long for the content to appear. It is better for students who may have an unreliable or slow internet connection

Cons:

  • The H5P module will still appear in the Content Bank of a copied course even if it was added as Make a copy of the file. However, if you later update the H5P module in the Content Bank, it will not automatically update on the course page. To update the activity with the edited content you will need to delete the file from the activity that is currently on your course page and add the edited content.

If you need help with replacing H5P content files, please see our tutorial H5P: Linking a module with "Make a copy".
