Introduction

The Pathways Editor enables you to design various experiences within your app, whether you're crafting a straightforward linear journey for users through educational content with sub-lessons or a more intricate experience tailored to their demographic or their responses. This tool empowers app creators to tailor a more personalized experience, ensuring user engagement and presenting content relevant to their interests.

This article demonstrates

Where to find Pathways Editor

Steps:

  1. Open Cogniss Creator and locate your app

  2. From the Contents menu, head to the Activity tab

  3. Create a new activity and ensure to set templates to Pathways

This should create a new pathways activity from the list

  4. Hit save changes.

  5. Return to the newly created activity with Pathways as a template and launch the pathways editor from here

Basic linear flow

You can use pathways to connect a series of activities in one linear order, allowing your users to navigate through them one after another.

For this example flow, we will construct a pathway that connects all the child activities (ie. Modules 1.1, 1.2, 1.3) to form a complete module for a single app experience.

Requirements

Before opening up the pathways editor, ensure all the activities are created as per the diagram above. We will use the pathways editor to tie them all together.

  1. Create the Pathway (Activity with Pathways set as template)

  2. Create all the Activities that will be used (Modules 1.1 - 1.3)

Make sure to have the Pathway and the activities are ready before putting them into a linear pathway experience

How to set up a basic linear flow

  1. Select the pathway activity and launch the Pathways Editor. This will launch the editor screen

  2. To begin, click on “add activity” and select the relevant subject and the activity you want the pathway to begin with

  3. Repeat these steps, adding one activity at a time until you've finished adding all the desired activities to your pathway. These now link the activities together in a linear order

Note: Please be aware that the sequence you've arranged them in will determine the user's journey.

  4. Hit the Save and Exit button. This pathway activity (Module 1: Introduction pathway) will serve as the entry point for accessing the linear app experience.

  5. This will take you back to the Activity settings. Ensure to save the overall Activity as well.

  6. Now, check out your mobile or web app to see the pathways flow. (Remember to refresh your app to see your changes)

Multiple flows using pathways conditions

With pathways, this allows you to integrate rules or conditions tailored to your user responses. This will personalised the experience to your users by delivering information that is most relevant to them.

For the above example flow, there will be a starting flow for all users but will end in a split depending on the user's response to the "parent or practitioner" question.

Please note: activities within a pathway are always presented in a linear order. Introducing conditions provides you with the ability to regulate the content visible to your users and effectively manage their experiences.

Requirements

Similar to the basic flow, we will need to ensure all the activities needed are created as per the diagram above. We will use the pathways editor to set them up.

  1. Create the Pathway activity (Activity with Pathways set as template)

  2. Create the activity with a multiple choice question "Parents or Practitioner"

  3. Create all the Activities that will correspond to the question

How to set up multiple flows with conditions

  1. Select the pathway activity and launch the pathways editor. This will launch the editor screen.

  2. Add the relevant activities for this pathway flow, including the alternate activities required

Activities within a pathway are always presented in a linear order. Introducing conditions provides you with the ability to regulate the content visible to your users and effectively manage their experiences.

  3. Once all activities have been added, navigate to "[Activity] Parent questionnaire 1" on the left side of the editor. We will then proceed to add a condition for the activity

  4. Under Advanced settings, hit the 'Add rule' button. This section allows you to add the condition to the activity based on the user's response.

  5. Locate the activity prompting the question for parents or practitioners. As we're adding a condition specific to the parent flow, select the 'Parent' option. Once selected, remember to click 'Save' to finalize the process

  6. Navigate to the practitioner questionnaire activity on the left side of the editor and repeat steps 3 and 5. This time for the Practitioner questionnaire activity, choose the 'Practitioner option'. When done, hit the Save and Exit button.

  7. This will take you back to the Activity settings. Ensure to save the overall Activity as well.

  8. Now, check out your mobile or web app to see the pathways flow. (Remember to refresh your app to see your changes)

Since this is version 1 of the editor, conditions are limited to multi-choice and multi-select questions.
