CoGrader Originality and Grammar Checks

CoGrader includes built-in AI Detection, Plagiarism, and Grammar tools to help teachers review student writing more closely and identify areas that may need further attention.

AI Detection and Plagiarism are now combined under a single Originality tab.

When you open Originality, you can switch between AI Detection and Plagiarism, or scroll through the report to review the results.

AI Detection helps identify writing patterns that may be associated with AI-generated or AI-assisted text.

Rather than providing an AI percentage, CoGrader focuses on helping you decide whether parts of the submission should be reviewed with the student.

Depending on the analysis, CoGrader may flag the submission with a status such as Possibly AI-assisted or Possibly AI-generated.

When CoGrader identifies a concern, the report highlights specific passages and provides:

This gives teachers a starting point for a conversation rather than treating an automated detection result as proof.

You can also review the highlighted text directly in the student's essay. Selecting or hovering over a highlight can provide more information about why that passage was flagged.

The Plagiarism section checks the student's writing against online sources for potential overlap.

When matches are identified, CoGrader provides information to help you review them. When no significant overlap is found, the report will indicate that no matches were found.

AI Detection and Plagiarism are part of the same Originality report, but they answer different questions:

AI detection tools are not perfect. CoGrader's Originality report is designed around a teacher-in-the-loop approach.

A flag does not prove that a student used AI, and the absence of a flag does not guarantee that they did not.

Use the report alongside your knowledge of the student's previous work, the assignment and classroom context, the highlighted passages and explanations, and a conversation with the student when appropriate.

The goal is to give you useful signals and specific areas to investigate while keeping the final judgment with you.

The Grammar tab highlights spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and other language issues.

You can review highlighted issues directly alongside the student's writing. CoGrader also groups feedback to make it easier to identify patterns.

Under Where to focus, you can see the most common issues first. You can also open All notes for a more complete review.

Grammar is intended to support instruction and revision rather than simply identify errors.

Inside a student's feedback view, you'll now see three main tabs:

AI Detection and Plagiarism are no longer separate top-level tabs. Both are located inside Originality.

Occasionally, an Originality check may not complete. You may see a message such as “This analysis never finished” or “Couldn't run the AI check.”

If this happens, you can rerun the analysis.

For an individual student:

You can also rerun the checks for the entire assignment:

During processing, CoGrader moves through Reading, Checking, and Writing up.

If the AI check itself cannot be completed, CoGrader may display “Couldn't run the AI check.” In this situation, CoGrader does not make an AI or authorship call. The plagiarism result is unaffected.

If you see this message, use Re-check for Originality & Grammar or Re-check all for Originality & Grammar to run the analysis again.

Grammar feedback can now be included when exporting feedback.

When exporting, select Grammar and choose the information you want to include, such as:

You can combine Grammar with other export options such as comments/highlights, scores, revision count, and the student's answer.

AI Detection and Plagiarism results cannot currently be included in exported feedback.

If you need to retain or share a specific Originality result, you can take a screenshot of the relevant AI Detection or Plagiarism section when appropriate.

This is expected with the new Originality experience.

CoGrader no longer centers the AI Detection report around a 0–100% AI similarity score. Instead, the report provides a status, identifies relevant passages, and gives teachers questions and guidance for reviewing those passages with the student.

This reflects the purpose of the tool: to provide a signal for teacher review rather than a verdict based on a percentage.

If you upgrade to a plan that includes these tools, previously graded assignments may need to be rechecked before the new results appear.
