How to Add, Rename, Duplicate, Archive, or Delete Classes and Assignments in CoGrader

Add a class before you have submissions, rename, duplicate, archive or delete classes and assignments, change a student's name, and edit a prompt.

Add a class (without submissions)

You can create a class now and add assignments and student work later. This is handy at the start of a term, when you want your classes set up before any work comes in.

  1. In the left sidebar, expand Classes and click View all. The Classes and assignments page opens.

  2. Click + Add class at the top right.

  3. In the Add class window, choose how to add it:

    • Add manually: type a Class name (for example, Period 3 English) and click Add class.

    • Or import from your school platform: choose Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, Microsoft, Brightspace, or Blackboard.

Important: If you add a class manually, you won't be able to sync it with a school platform later. If your class lives in Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology or another platform and you want to send feedback back there, import it from that platform instead.

Your new class appears in the Active list. When you're ready to grade, click Grade next to the class to set up an assignment and add student submissions.

Rename a class or assignment

  1. In the left sidebar, expand Classes (or click View all to see the full Classes and assignments page).

  2. Find the class or assignment.

  3. Click the three dots icon on the right side of the row.

  4. Select Rename, enter the new name and confirm.

From inside an assignment: click the assignment title at the top of the page, make your edits and save.

Google Classroom classes: you can rename an imported class inside CoGrader. This changes the name in your CoGrader workspace only, not in Google Classroom. When a class name changes in Google Classroom, CoGrader shows an indicator with the updated name so you can match it.

Duplicate an assignment (reuse it for another class)

Teaching the same assignment to several classes? Duplicate it instead of setting it up again. The copy keeps the same prompt, rubric, feedback style, grading parameters and advanced rules.

  1. In the left sidebar, expand Classes, then expand the class that has the assignment.

  2. Click the three dots next to the assignment name.

  3. Select Duplicate. A copy named "Assignment name (Copy)" appears under the same class.

  4. Open the copy, click the three dots next to it and select Rename so you can tell it apart (for example, add the other class's period or section).

  5. The copy also carries over the original's student submissions. To use it for a different group, tick the checkbox next to Student Name to select all, click the three dots on the right of the table and select Delete selected.

  6. Click Add submissions and add the other class's work: upload files, add them from Google Drive or OneDrive, use a CSV, or add handwritten work.

Good to know:

  • The copy stays in the same class. You can't move an assignment to a different class.

  • You can't import students from Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology into a duplicated assignment, and feedback from a duplicate can't be sent back to your LMS. If the other class lives in your LMS, import that class's assignment with + Grade new instead, then pick the same rubric from My Rubrics and set the same feedback style and grading parameters.

  • Duplicating doesn't regrade the original assignment, and grading the copy doesn't change the original.

Archive and restore a class

Archiving removes a class from your active list while keeping all of its data. You can restore it at any time.

To archive a class:

  1. In the left sidebar, expand Classes and click View all.

  2. Click the three dots on the right side of the class row.

  3. Select Archive.

To restore or delete an archived class:

  1. Go to Classes > View all.

  2. At the top of the Classes and assignments page, switch from Active to Archived.

  3. Click the three dots next to the class and select Restore to move it back to your active list, or Delete to remove it permanently.

Search: on the Classes and assignments page, use Search class at the top right to find a class by name. It works for active and archived classes.

Delete a class or assignment

You can delete a class even if it still contains assignments.

  1. In the left sidebar, expand Classes (or click View all).

  2. Find the class or assignment.

  3. Click the three dots icon on the right side of the row.

  4. Select Delete and confirm.

Warning: deleting a class or assignment permanently removes all its submissions and grading data. If you might need it again, archive it instead.

Archive or delete several classes at once

  1. Go to Classes > View all.

  2. Tick the checkboxes next to the classes you want (or the checkbox next to Class to select all).

  3. Click the three dots at the top right of the list.

  4. Choose Archive/restore selected classes or Delete selected classes.

You can also archive or delete all classes from the three dots at the top of the classes list.

Change a student's name

  1. Click Classes and open the class, then the assignment.

  2. Find the student's submission and click the three dots on the right.

  3. Select Change student name, enter the new name and save.

Sort and display names: on the assignment dashboard, click the arrow next to Student Name to choose a display format (First Last, Last, First, F. Last or Last, F.), sort by first or last name, or toggle Hide names to grade anonymously.

Edit an assignment prompt

You can update or add a prompt at any time, even after grading.

  1. Open the assignment.

  2. Click the pencil icon next to Change prompt at the top of the page.

  3. Type or paste the updated prompt and click Save.

Regrade the assignment if you want CoGrader to use the new prompt.
