[Schoology] How to Use CoGrader with the Schoology Integration for School Plans

Import Schoology submissions with the School plan integration, grade them in CoGrader and send the feedback back to Schoology.

Written by Gabriel Chi

Works best with:

CoGrader can fully import and share feedback when students submit directly to a Schoology assignment in any of these formats:

  • .docx (Word documents)

  • PDFs

  • Images (e.g., JPG, PNG), including photos of handwritten work

  • Typed text entered directly into Schoology’s submission box

Best practice: When creating assignments in Schoology, use the standard file upload format rather than a Google Drive link.

Not compatible with:

  • Schoology assignments created with Google Drive, OneDrive, or any other cloud-drive assignment tool.

    • These assignments act like links to the student's personal document, so the file is hosted in the drive, not Schoology.

    • CoGrader cannot access those files directly due to platform permissions. You may see an import error for these students, such as "Can't grade. No attachment found" or "cannot import, file is not a Schoology doc."

    • Feedback can't be sent back to Schoology for them, because CoGrader never had the original file from Schoology.

If your assignment is already set up with a Drive

  • Use the Google Drive or OneDrive upload option: in CoGrader, under Student submissions, click Google Drive (or OneDrive if the files are in OneDrive). This pulls the submissions straight from the drive without downloading them first.

  • Grade as usual, then click Share feedback and choose a download or print option. Feedback can't be sent back to Schoology automatically because the files weren't imported from Schoology.

Step 1: Import Submissions from Schoology

  1. Open CoGrader.

  2. Click + Grade new in the left sidebar.

  3. In the Grade new assignment window, under or import from LMS, choose Schoology.

  4. Log in using your Schoology credentials if prompted.

    • ClassLink-based authentication is supported. If your district uses ClassLink, make sure you log in with a teacher account (not an admin account), as admin accounts do not connect properly through Edlink.

  5. Browse your Schoology classes and select the class you want to import, then select the assignment under that class. CoGrader will automatically pull in the assignment prompt.

  6. Set up your rubric. If your assignment already has a rubric attached in Schoology, you can recreate or import that rubric in CoGrader. See How to Add a Rubric in CoGrader.

  7. Set Grading parameters and Advanced rules if you want.

Step 2: Let CoGrader Grade

  1. Once your assignment and rubric are set, click Import and grade.

  2. CoGrader will evaluate each submission based on your rubric.

  3. You can review to make edits, add comments, or use the chat to revise the feedback. See How to Add Additional Grading Instructions Using the Chat Option.

  4. Click Approve for each submission when you're satisfied.

Step 3: Share Feedback Back to Schoology

  1. Click Share feedback on the assignment page (top right, next to Add submissions). The first time, CoGrader shows a tip: Share feedback here.

  2. Choose the Schoology option, marked suggested for Schoology imports. You can also download or print the feedback instead.

  3. Choose which students and feedback sections to share, then check the preview of what students will see.

  4. CoGrader will automatically attach a feedback file link to each student’s original submission in Schoology.

  5. Students will see the link in the comment section (submission activity) inside their submission and can click on it to open the file.

Students using the Schoology iPad app

  • The Schoology iPad app turns CoGrader feedback links into plain text, so students can't click or copy them there. This is a limitation of the Schoology app.

  • Ask students to open their feedback in the web version of Schoology (in a browser), where the links work normally.

How to avoid issues

  • Use regular Schoology file upload assignments for smooth import and sharing with CoGrader.

  • If students need to work in Google Docs or OneDrive, ask them to download their work as a .docx or PDF and upload it directly to Schoology.

If your school hasn’t integrated Schoology or you run into issues, you can use the manual Schoology grading workflow.

Not on a School plan? If you use Chrome, try the CoGrader for Schoology extension.
