How does a credit freeze work?

A credit freeze protects you against credit fraud by blocking access to your credit reports. No one—not even you—will be able to apply for new credit in your name.

Overview

When you apply for credit, your lender or card issuer will usually check your credit before making a decision. If your credit is frozen, they can’t access the data required to approve your application.

The process of freezing your credit

To freeze your credit, you need to individually contact each of the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Can a credit freeze be removed?

You can remove a freeze permanently or temporarily. Keep in mind, if you remove a credit freeze, you’ll have to let your credit “thaw” before it can be frozen again. You can remove a security freeze online, over the phone or via mail.
