What is a DPN?
The DPN (Dots Part Number) is an internal identifier automatically assigned to an asset when it is uploaded into Dots.
The Stock view is based entirely on the DPN, meaning that assets sharing the same DPN will always be grouped together.
How is a DPN created? ⚙️
The DPN is generated once, at the time of asset upload, based on the data provided.
Primary rule for DPN creation:
MPN (Manufacturer Product Number) is the primary field used to create the DPN.
If MPN is not available, the asset name is used instead.
Assets uploaded with MPN
When an asset is uploaded with an MPN:
The DPN is created based on the MPN
MPN is treated as a non-changing identifying attribute
The DPN remains fixed once created (unless changed manually by the Dots team)
Result:
Assets uploaded with the same MPN will receive the same DPN and be grouped together in Stock view.
Assets uploaded without MPN
If an asset is uploaded without an MPN:
The DPN is generated based on the asset name at the time of upload
Result:
Assets with the same name and no MPN will receive the same DPN and be grouped together in Stock view.
Why are my assets grouped together? 🔍
If you see assets grouped together in Stock view, it means they share the same DPN.
In cases like this, the grouped assets were originally uploaded with the same identifying data (for example, the same MPN or the same asset name, such as iPhone 13 Pro).
This can be verified in the Asset Change Log, which shows the original values at the time of upload.
Even if the MPN, model, or name is updated later, the DPN does not change, because the DPN is based on the original upload data.
Changing a DPN for an existing asset
For manually uploaded assets that are already in the system, the DPN cannot be changed automatically.
If you need to manually change an asset’s DPN, please open a support ticket, and our team will review the request and assist you.
Important things to keep in mind ⚠️
The DPN is created once, at upload time
Updating MPN, model, or asset name later does not update the DPN
Stock view grouping always reflects original upload data, not later edits
Best practices to avoid unexpected grouping
Always upload assets with an accurate MPN when available
Avoid uploading multiple assets with identical names and no MPN
Review asset data before upload to ensure consistency
