Production - Recipes

Updated over 4 months ago

πŸ’‘ In Douano, you create a recipe for every beverage you produce yourself. That recipe is then used in a production order to brew/distill the beverage.

πŸ’‘ It is important that the beverage, e.g. beer, spirits, … and the raw materials are created first under Products. Want to create a beverage and/or raw materials? Follow this πŸ‘‰ link and select the help page for your product.

β‡’ Go to Production - Recipes and click on the green plus icon.

General data

  • Recipe name: the name of the recipe.

πŸ’‘ If desired, you can also include a batch size or a version number in the name to easily recognize recipes.

  • Expiration period: the typical number of days a production remains suitable for consumption. This can still be adjusted at the time of bottling.

  • Quantity: the quantity, expressed in the unit of the produced product, that is made with this recipe at 100% yield.

πŸ’‘ Based on this number, the required ingredients of a production order are recalculated proportionally.

  • Product: the product that you will produce with this recipe. This is usually a finished product such as beer, spirits, …

  • Production process: the process that will be used to execute this recipe.

πŸ’‘ In Douano, there are three standard production processes available: Brewing process, Distillation process, and Bottling process, from which you can select.

πŸ’‘ You can add additional steps to these processes, or you can create your own production process. Want to add a step or create a production process? Follow this πŸ‘‰ guide.

  • Visible in selection lists: checked by default to make this recipe selectable in a production order.

  • Efficiency: optionally, you can track yield. This is for informational purposes only.

  • Description: here you can optionally provide more context on why this recipe exists, for example if you have a specific batch size in mind or if it’s a particular version of a recipe.

Lot-/Batch number template

πŸ’‘ You can set a template for this recipe to automatically generate batch or lot numbers for produced batches of this beverage.

  • Batch/lot number template: this template can be built by selecting one or more variables:

    • Year (short): the year expressed in 2 digits, e.g. 25.

    • Year: the year expressed in 4 digits, e.g. 2025.

    • Month: the month expressed in 2 digits, e.g. 07.

    • Day: the day expressed in 2 digits, e.g. 09.

    • Day of the year: the day expressed in 3 digits, e.g. 184.

    • Julian day: number of days since the start of the Julian calendar (info).

    • Transaction number: the unique, sequential order number of the production order.

πŸ’‘ By combining these variables, you can create your own unique lot/batch numbers. You can also add an abbreviation of the beverage and separate variables with a character.

Example: Douano Blond β†’ β€œDByear-month/transaction number” generates the following batch/lot number: DB2025-03/P17

πŸ’‘ If you use the same variables for each product you produce, you can also create this template in Settings. In every new recipe you create, the template will be loaded automatically. You can still override or supplement it with extra details in the recipe itself.

Follow this πŸ‘‰ guide to enter a general lot/batch number template.

Ingredients

πŸ’‘ In this section, you enter all the ingredients needed to produce the specified quantity.

  • Raw material: the product, such as a specific malt, sugar, aroma, …

  • Quantity: the amount, expressed in the unit of the product (pieces, liter, kilogram, …).

  • Process step: the optional step in the selected production process where this ingredient is used.

πŸ’‘ You can add the same ingredient multiple times in a recipe, each time linked to a different process step. You will need to add the ingredient as a new line each time and select the process step.

πŸ’‘ Using the two dashes to the left of the ingredient, you can reorder the ingredients in the list, for example grouping them by process step.

  • Cost: the cost calculated for this product via the Cost Management module. This value is for information only and cannot be changed.

πŸ’‘ Want to set a product cost? Follow this πŸ‘‰ guide.

πŸ’‘ More information on real-time product cost calculation can be found in this πŸ‘‰ guide.

Residual products

πŸ’‘ In each recipe you create, you can also include by-products. Typically this refers to 'spent grains' in brewing, or 'heads' and 'tails' in distilling.

πŸ’‘ Since some of these residual products end up in the food industry, it is important to keep a traceable inventory of them in Douano.

  • Raw material: the product that will come into stock as a by-product.

  • Quantity: the amount, expressed in the unit of the product (pieces, liter, kilogram, …).

  • Status: the process step after which the product comes into stock.

Notes

  • Note: in this field you can optionally explain the procedure to be followed when executing this recipe.

πŸ’‘ Typically, this may include a mash schedule and other important steps the brewer needs to know.
