Breaststroke is a challenging stroke to master and requires a combination of skill, coordination and timing to go fast!

Description

Timing is arguably the most important aspect of breaststroke. At a basic level, there are phases: pull, kick & glide.

Key Points

  1. Pull: Use an out-sweep stroke to break streamline and lift your head. During the in-sweep, catch the water with your hands & forearms, whist also taking a breath.

  2. Kick: As you begin to drive your hands forward, use breaststroke whip kick to enhance your momentum.

  3. Glide: Gliding in a streamlined position helps you maximize distance per stroke and reduce resistance.

  4. Head: Focus on keeping your head down (look at the bottom of the pool) during the glide phase.

Note

Each stroke always starts and ends in a streamline position. The more quickly you can get to your streamline position, the more efficient your stroke will be.
