Butterfly is a challenging stroke to master and requires a combination of advanced skill, coordination and timing!

Description

It could seem impossible if you're new to butterfly. But rest assured, it isn't! To help you improve your butterfly technique, follow these stroke fundamentals.

Key Points

  1. Body Position: Your head should be neutral and looking straight down, and your hips should be high, near the surface of the water.

  2. Pull: Engage the early vertical forearm and pull straight down.

  3. Kick: Complete 2 kicks per 1 arm cycle - at the start and end of each stroke.

  4. Breathing Pattern: Breathe every stroke to start with, then try breathing every other stroke as you advance.

Note

If you're new to butterfly, focus on performing the basic drills correctly, such as dolphin kick and single arm, before attempting the full stroke. You can find examples of these drills in the DuoSwim app.
