Learn how to execute the flip turn with this step-by-step guide.

Description

A flip turn is used for backstroke & freestyle stroke. The flip turn allows you to change direction at the wall to stay swimming continuously. To perform this turn you'll do a full somersault on the wall and push off in streamline.

Key Points

  1. Approach: Use leading arm to pull yourself into the flip.

  2. Your Last Stroke: Flip at one arm's length from the wall. Carry your momentum as you tuck into a small ball.

  3. Flip Turn: Perform a fast, full and powerful freestyle arm pull by quickly tucking in your their knees, arms and chin to your chest.

  4. Foot Plant: Ensure your feet are firmly planted on the pool wall, ideally shoulder-width apart, which will help with an effective push-off.

  5. Push-Off: Drive off the pool wall in a streamlined position, parallel to the pool's surface. Fly kick in streamline and use your core to return to your front.

Note

Practice mid-pool turns away from the wall to master the somersault movement.
