Learn how to execute the crossover turn with this step-by-step guide.

Description

The crossover turn is a flip turn that is primarily used in the Individual Medley when switching from backstroke to breaststroke.

Key Points

  1. Approach: Practice establishing the number of strokes you require from the backstroke turn flags to the wall.

  2. Touch: Your top arm will cross your body diagonally (across your nose) and you will touch the wall while on your back. Make sure you touch the wall while you are still on your back, or you will be disqualified.

  3. Flip: Rotate your body laterally, touch and push off the wall with your top arm, while you bring your knees to your head, which allows you to flip.

  4. Streamline Push: Drive off the pool wall in a perfect streamline, and transition from your side to your stomach.

Note

Practice mid-pool turns away from the wall to master the crossover movement.
