Learn how to execute the touch turn with this step-by-step guide.

Description

An open turn (touch turn) is used for butterfly & breaststroke. The aim of an open turn is to make your body as compact as you can. By performing this turn correctly your body should occupy as little space as possible at the point of greatest resistance, to reduce drag, and improve turn speed!

Key Points

  1. Two Hand Touch: Simultaneous touch under the water.

  2. Knees To Chest: Activate your core to bring your knees into wall, tuck up tight and rotate backward.

  3. Elbow Drop: One arm releases the wall with the elbow drawing back towards torso.

  4. Recovery Arm: The opposite arm leaves wall overhead as the feet pass underneath the hips.

  5. Streamline Push: Push off the wall on your side in streamline position.

Note

Practice mid-pool turns away from the wall to master the open turn movement.
