Freestyle Kick (Flutter Kick)
The freestyle kick, also known as the flutter kick, is a fundamental and efficient kicking technique used in the freestyle stroke.
Description
The freestyle kick is initiated from the hips, with relaxed ankles to maximize efficiency and propulsion. It is often practiced with a kickboard, where swimmers hold the top of the board with their hands and rest their arms on it for stability.
Key Points
Kick Just Beneath the Surface: Ensure your kicks are close to the water’s surface to minimize drag.
Initiate from the Hips: Start the motion from your hips, not your knees, for a more powerful and efficient kick.
Relax Your Ankles: Keep your ankles loose and allow them to "crack" like a whip, creating a fluid and natural kicking motion.
Focus on Both Directions: Pay attention to both the downward and upward portions of the kick to maintain consistent propulsion.
Note
If you are unable to perform a drill due to lack of equipment or comfort level, swim freestyle instead to continue practicing your technique.
