1) Your responsibilities as a carer

As a carer, you must:

  • Take reasonable care of your own health and safety, and the safety of the client and others

  • Follow edyn.care’s policies and procedures (available in your portal)

  • Follow the client’s care plan and risk assessment

  • Use safe working practices at all times

  • Use PPE correctly and maintain infection control standards

  • Apply dynamic risk assessment in the client’s home (see below)

  • Report hazards, incidents, accidents and near misses promptly

  • Never use unsafe equipment or undertake unsafe practices

  • Attend required training and refresher training

  • Cooperate with spot checks and supervision

If you are unsure whether something should be reported — report it.

2) Dynamic risk assessment (in the client’s home)

Client homes can change day-to-day. You must always assess risks as you work.

Examples of things to check:

  • Slips/trips hazards (loose rugs, clutter, spills)

  • Unsafe stairs / poor lighting

  • Fire hazards (unsafe heaters, blocked exits)

  • Unsafe equipment (broken hoist, unstable chair)

  • Client health changes affecting risk (dizziness, confusion, increased falls risk)

  • Infection risks (symptoms, poor hygiene conditions)

If something is unsafe:

  1. Make it safe if possible (without putting yourself at risk)

  2. Stop the activity if it cannot be done safely

  3. Report to the office/RCM immediately

3) Manual handling and mobility support

You must:

  • Use correct manual handling techniques taught in training

  • Follow the client’s moving & handling plan

  • Use equipment correctly (if provided)

  • Never attempt unsafe lifts or transfers

🚩 Stop and report if:

  • the client’s mobility has changed

  • equipment is missing or faulty

  • you feel the transfer is unsafe

  • the client refuses and it creates risk

4) Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)

You must follow IPC guidance at all times.

This includes:

  • Hand hygiene (before/after care tasks)

  • Wearing PPE when required

  • Safe disposal of clinical waste

  • Cleaning guidance in care plan

  • Reporting symptoms of illness (yours or the client’s)

If there is suspected infection/outbreak risk:

  • follow the IPC guidance in your portal

  • contact the office promptly for escalation support

5) Equipment safety

Only use equipment that is safe and fit for purpose.

You must:

  • check equipment before use

  • report faults immediately

  • not use broken/damaged equipment

Examples:

  • hoists

  • slide sheets

  • mobility aids

  • beds/chairs used for transfers

6) Fire safety (client home)

You must report any fire risks you identify, such as:

  • blocked exits

  • unsafe heaters or open flames

  • overloaded plug sockets / unsafe extension leads

  • no working smoke alarms (if known)

If there is immediate danger:

  • keep yourself and the client safe

  • call emergency services if required

  • notify edyn.care as soon as possible

7) What you must report

You must report all of the following:

Accidents / injuries

  • injury to the client

  • injury to you

  • injury to any visitor/contractor (if related to the care environment)

Near misses

A near miss is something that could have caused harm but didn’t.

Examples:

  • almost slipping on a wet floor

  • client nearly falling during transfer

  • unsafe equipment noticed before use

Dangerous occurrences / serious hazards

Examples:

  • serious equipment failure

  • major fire risk

  • unsafe structural hazards

Illness concerns (work-related)

Examples:

  • symptoms linked to work exposure

  • skin reactions to substances

  • breathing issues linked to cleaning products

Violence, aggression or threats

  • verbal abuse

  • threatening behaviour

  • physical aggression

Equipment failures impacting safety

Anything that makes care unsafe.

8) How to report an event

If an incident happens:

  1. Make safe

    • prioritise safety of you and the client

    • seek medical help if needed

    • call 999 if emergency

  2. Report immediately

    • contact the office / line manager / RCM via the event reporting route

  3. Complete event documentation

    • as soon as possible (ideally within 24 hours)

9) RIDDOR (important note)

Some serious work-related incidents must legally be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under RIDDOR.

You do not need to decide if something is RIDDOR reportable — edyn.care will handle this.

Your responsibility is simply:
report all incidents and near misses promptly.

10) Key policies you must follow (in your portal)

You should read and follow:

  • Moving & Handling Policy

  • Infection Control Policy

  • COSHH Policy (hazardous substances)

  • Medication Policy

  • Reporting Incidents / Accidents Policy

  • Lone Working Guide

  • Safeguarding Policy
