What is my food allowance?

To ensure clear, fair and legally compliant arrangements regarding food provision for live-in carers working in private homes

Whilst you are on placement, the arrangement’s for food will be one of the following:

  • The client directly manages food payment with the carer

  • The client and a carer have joint food shop (carer is still eligible for items up to £50 a week within that food basket)

  • Weekly food allowance managed by edyn.care, this is when they will see it on the payslip

If your package includes a food allowance then you will receive a payment of £50, this will be paid alongside your salary.

The £50 allowance covers main food items like meat/ vegetarian substitutes. Other staple items like bread and milk should be supplied by the care recipient. When cooking in a client’s home, it's important you are sensitive to cultural differences and the appropriateness of preparing highly fragranced foods.

We complete retroactive payment system for carer food allowances. This means that food allowance payments will now be processed after carers complete their placement week, rather than in advance.

Why we do retroactive

To improve the accuracy and efficiency of our payment process. By paying retrospectively, we will:

  • Reduce Errors: Payments will be more accurate as they are processed alongside regular payments, minimising manual data entry mistakes.

  • Simplify the Process: Carers will no longer need to provide separate bank details for food allowances as this will be issued within package payment.

  • Improve Reporting: Now in your invoices and payslips food allowance will show as a line item which means you will have a greater overview of all payments.
