What happens and how do I report if my care recipient has an event?

Definitions

Event

  • all accidents, incidents and near misses

Accident

  • any unexpected event that causes damage, injury, or harm (e.g. a client had a fall and fractured their hip)

Incident

  • any unexpected event that does not result in serious losses or injury (e.g. a client was verbally aggressive towards a carer or there was a medication error)

Near miss

  • where an incident was avoided (e.g. a client trips but doesn't fall)

What should be reported?

  • Accidents (including fires) or violent incidents leading to injury to members of the care team whilst they were undertaking their duties

  • Near miss involving carers whilst they were undertaking their duties

  • The most serious abuse/threats to carers not resulting in physical injury

  • Accidents leading to injury caused by our activity or omission involving

  • clients or any other third party not directly employed by edyn.care

  • Near miss caused by our activity or omission involving clients or any

  • other third party not directly employed by edyn.care

  • Occupationally related health conditions confirmed by a General Practitioner

What steps should I take?

  1. Event happens.

  2. Ensure the client is safe.

  3. If the event is a genuine emergency, where someone is seriously ill or injured, call 999. In other cases, medical assistance should be sought through 111/GP.

  4. In any event (emergency or otherwise) when safe to do so, call the office on 020 3970 9900 to inform them of the event.

  5. Complete event form. The form can be found using the button below.
