Why is auto insurance regulated by provincial governments?

Written by Kayla Randall

Depending on the province, regulators oversee how insurance companies assess risk, determine premium, and handle claims. They also actively determine which rating factors can and cannot be used by insurers when setting auto insurance rates. Insurance companies must have their risk classification system approved by the province's regulators and must receive approval anytime they want to change rates.
